The Politics of Prayer As Democrats abandon traditional values and religion, their core voters are slipping away    By Tony Quinn, Tony Quinn is co-editor of the California Target Book, a nonpartisan analysis of California legislative and congressional campaigns.

SACRAMENTO — A GOP gerrymander of Democratic districts in Texas will probably add six to eight Republicans to the House. Every other big state is so heavily gerrymandered that no other major changes are likely. This means the GOP majority in the House is expected to grow by at least half a dozen seats.

That is the point the article was trying to make. The emerging Latino middle-class is conservative culturally and strongly family-oriented. They are still up for grabs.

"on which Democrats are with the majority of the public, "

This is flat wrong. Last surveys I saw, 51% of WOMEN were now "pro-life," and a majority of men have always been. I don't know of one single poll that supports this statement.

Imo shows the writer is a liberal and is bemoaning the decline in popularity of his party.

Actually we are only allowed to excerpt LATimes and Washington Post stories. That is why only an excerpt was posted. The Moderator edited the post because the excerpt was "insufficient"

"A ballot initiative that would have defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman"

I have always thought that that was the definition of marriage. A quick check shows that my Webster's New World Dictionary agrees.

As far as I can see, once the courts assume the power to change the actual meanings of our words and language, they have assumed unlimited (totalitarian) powers.

Yes, I think you cannot post full text from LA Slimes.

Jim got in big time trouble over this and there is a legal ruling prohibiting it.

"As far as I can see, once the courts assume the power to change the actual meanings of our words and language, they have assumed unlimited (totalitarian) powers."

That is precisely my point. Unless and until Republicans can muster the political courage to fight judicial activism, we are as a society, screwed.

on which Democrats are with the majority of the public

Actually, this is no longer true, and the DemocRats are NOT with the majority of the public. About 75% respond "YES" when asked if life begins at conception. This is indeed inconsistent with the approximately 50% who say they want to allow abortions under limited conditions, but the majority DO contend that unrestricted abortion up until the moment of birth should be outlawed.

The Democrats will continue to be a major threat to America for a long time. They control the bureaucracy at all levels of government even when the GOP controls the front office, they control academia, labor, most of the legal profession, many courts at all levels, much of the media, Hollywood, etc.... We can't afford to get complacent.

"...they don't understand capitalism or there are simply too many socialists."

One and the same. That's how socialists get to be socialists. If you understand ANYTHING about capitalism you can't be a socialist, IMHO.

"That is precisely my point"

I agree with your point, then. It's a sad day we have come to when the courts, supposedly protecting our freedom, have taken on the power to legislate, and in this case, actually direct the legislature to legislate particular laws, which is the same thing.

We can't afford to get complacent.

I couldn't agree more. More to think on from the article:

Yet, Democrats seem to have forgotten how important religious identification was to their success. Many Catholics and conservative Protestants once regarded Republicans as country-club elitists with whom they had little or nothing in common. A Southern Baptist named Harry S. Truman won in 1948 with solid Catholic and fundamentalist Protestant support.
