Because if the midwest disappeared tomorrow nobody would notice for a few days. But if the East Coast shuts down, so does much of American & International business.

Just kidding. But seriously, a heavy snow in the East which could shut down N/S transporation (particularly the very important I-95 corridor) is much more serious situation than in the midwest. From a travel standpoint, if I-80 is shut or stalled because of snow, there are alternate transportation routes further south. If I-95 is shut, that's pretty much it. Also in the midwest, there are few major airports (e.g. O'Hare), in the east from Boston to Atlanta, there are at least 10 major airports and about 50 medium ones.

Because that's where the network sissies are all located. Out here in "flyover country" we're too busy working and keeping the nation's engine stoked we don't wait around for bad weather. We just keep on keepin' on.

BTW, we've already had 6" of snow today with another 1-3" expected. Yep, I was 4 minutes late to work...

I agree, a larger population lives there. I just laugh hearing the stories of miami shutting down years ago after getting an inch of snow.

It's likely to be in the form of ice, so even if you get to sleep in tomorrow there is a very high chance of having no electricity. The branches on the pine trees can't hold much ice before they start falling.

I'm really hoping that they have it wrong and we get snow instead. I have a 3yr old and a 1yr old that I would love to see playing in snow for their first time.

Haha I totally agree with you. I live in the East (NJ) and a lot of snow sucks but it isn't the end of the world.

The media have to play it up for all it's worth though. If they start talking death & destruction, people start tuning in and their ratings go up. In the end, they are not so much about doing a public service, they are more about getting advertiser $$$$$$.

The last hurricane that hit this area was a perfect example. Even after it was obvious that the thing was going to miss directly hitting us, the media still carried on like we were all about to die. It was a sad and pathetic attempt to hold on to viewers...they should have been ashamed but I doubt they were.

You should see the grocery stores here in GA when snow or freezing rain is predicted. You can't find a single loaf of break and you'll be lucky to find milk. It also takes about a half hour to get through the checkout line.

We stock up because we all know that most people here can't drive in snow or ice. I learned to drive in it when I lived in northeast TN, but I still wouldn't drive in it here because someone would hit me no matter how well I drove.

Oh brother. I like snow, but I wish it were a little bit warmer so I could at least go sledding! At 15 degrees, it's just too cold. :(

The weatherman on WNBC is showing 12" as Heavy Snow?

The way things have been going this winter, I'd consider HEAVY accumulations to be 15" and up. A foot of snow just doesn't seem like all that much this year. We have about 7" still on the ground in Southeastern CT and it was FOUR DEGREES when I woke this morning (about 10 above just north of Times Square now).

If it hits 33 degrees, I'll be in my light windbreaker. When it hits 50, I'll be in shorts. I've cut up three cords of hardwood and it has to last.

I know someone who grew up in Central Minneosota. She says that they really did wear warm weather gear when it hit 55 deg F in the spring.

Yes it is! My mother says every time they send up some space rocket we always get bad weather. So yes it is Dubya's fault :D

Consider yourself lucky. We are about 90 miles north of Atlanta and everything is iced over. We spent last night with no power, but thank goodness we have a fireplace. Now it looks like there is more rain coming this way......*sigh*.

I know the feeling now and the only indication that things will EVENTUALLY get better is that it's now light past 5pm (but not by much).

Was stuck in Saskatoon once. Didn't go above 5 below zero F the whole week. Leave the beer outside too long and it would turn into an exploding slush bomb when you opened it...if it wasn't frozen solid.

Not that this is a plug for them but LL Bean sells Micro-fleece lined Dungarees and Chinos. BUY THEM. Couldn't recommend highly enough. Global Warming, 'ya know.
