LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sunday night's Super Bowl, noted as much for a slip of flesh by singer Janet Jackson (news) as for a close win by the New England Patriots over the Carolina Panthers, was the highest rated in six years, CBS said on Monday.
Citing preliminary data from Nielsen Media Research, the network said the championship football game drew a 44.2 household rating, which represents the percentage of homes that own television sets. That was up 1 percent over 2003 and the best since 1998.
The game's share, or percentage of television sets that were actually in use and tuned into the game, was a 63. Average total viewership figures for the game were not yet available as of mid-morning Monday.
The Super Bowl is traditionally one of television's top events; 10 of the 20 most-watched TV broadcasts of all time, according to Nielsen, were Super Bowls.
CBS is a unit of Viacom Inc.

Wow, I believe it. What a game.
I assume they mean the Packers game was the last high-rated one.
BTW, even though Justin Timberlake ripped off her top, I still think he's a homo.

It is a shame that the halftime idiocy seems to overshadow a great game by two very good teams.

I wonder if the NFL has any legal basis for pulling the Superbowl from CBS...

I don't think it will be there next year. I don't know about next year, but I do know that the networks, except for Queer Eye NBC, take turns hosting the game.

There was treacherous winter weather in many parts of the country yesterday, which proably had at least a little to do with higher ratings.

Well, it was all a dud, up until the final half. Then the game was enjoyable. But I wished it would have gone to overtime, so it could be the first ever.

"I wonder if the NFL has any legal basis for pulling the Superbowl from CBS...If they do, they should have to interview minority networks before giving the Super Bowl to another network (Univision, BET, UPN, etc...). =P

I'm suprised at this. I don't think I've ever been less interested in a Superbowl. Neither team was very good, and would have been destroyed by the mid-90's Broncos, 49-ers or Cowboys. But I guess that is the NFL of today, whether we like it or not.

While I was home at lunch I got a call from Neilson Ratings.. Their questions:
1) Do we watch Drama, News, Comedy, or Realty Shows?
My answer FOX NEWS and HGTV>
2) Am I or anyone in my family of Spanish decent?
No,
I added.... tell your employer.... This house hold is sick and tired of CBS, ABC, NBC.... and we will NEVER watch CBS again while I am alive!

I wonder if people realize that Janet Jackson is the sister of Michael Jackson. In fact, Janet had often been described as the "normal one" of the Jackson clan. What does this incident say about the Jackson family in general? I would venture to say that this incident would cause many to have a lower opinion of the Jackson family then they did before.
I liked watching the football in the first and second halves. I did not like the music of the halftime show at all. I did not see the breast-flashing incident because I was upstairs getting some bacon and scallops out of the oven. All I can say is that the music is awful.
Could somebody out there please tell me why both Janet and Michael Jackson insist on having dozens of scantily-clad dancers in their acts? What do those half-naked dancers, contorting in some weird choreographed manner, add to the music? Or are they supposed to take attention away from how dreadful the music is?
How is it that the performers of last night sell millions of records. Who are these people (buying the records)? Do they really like the music? It is as if these performers and their fans exist in some kind of really weird alternate universe, where this kind of music is appreciated.

Thing is, the halftime show is ALWAYS lame beyond belief. I missed this one, as I went to the gym and hit the treadmill during halftime. LOL.
