CBS TO IMPLEMENT ENHANCED DELAY OF GRAMMY AWARDS
Additional Measure Will Allow for Video Editing

CBS announced today plans to enhance their ability to edit out any inappropriate and unexpected events from the Sunday, Feb. 8 broadcast of the "46th Annual Grammy Awards" on CBS.

The enhancement will include the ability to delete both inappropriate audio and video footage from the broadcast. Using a five second delay, CBS has traditionally employed procedures that allow only for the elimination of inappropriate audio. This new enhancement will accomplish both. The precise length of the new delay has yet to be determined.

The new procedure, which is being coordinated with the Recording Academy, is being put in place to safeguard against any unexpected and inappropriate content being broadcast during the awards ceremony.

The "46th Annual Grammy Awards" will be presented on CBS Sunday, Feb. 8 (8:00 PM- 11:30 PM, ET/ PT). CBS has broadcasted the Grammy Awards since 1973. The awards are given out annually by the Academy, which is dedicated to improving the quality of life and cultural condition for music and its makers. This year's award ceremony will be produced in association with Cossette Productions. Pierre Cossette is the executive producer, Ken Ehrlich is the writer/producer and Walter Miller is the producer/director. John Cossette is the supervising producer and Tisha Fein is the coordinating producer. RATING: TVPG

Despite what is apparently the conventional wisdom here, the Super Bowl was not broadcast with a 7-second delay. It was truly live, and while the network may have known about the incident in advance, you can't use the delay argument to prove it.

I know I'm just dreaming, but wouldn't it be swell if the so-called artists decide to stop going to these never ending awards shows because of such 'awful' restrictions of their freedom to continue to demonstrate to the public their pathetic need for good or bad publicity.

Or maybe they'll be moved to cable, if they must pat themselves on the back every other week...

Well, the way I see it, they created their own mess -- he didn't. Plus, anyone who visits Drudge to get the latest gets dosed with a conservative slant. On Grammy night itself, if you listen to Drudge Radio you're likely to hear more hoots & hollers and derision than anything else. So it's all good. :)

I'm not sure what's causing the confusion. Some people here have argued strenuously that the Super Bowl was telecast with a 7 second delay, so that they could have cut out the Jackson incident if they wanted to.

It's not true. The local radio station was also covering it, and they said they weren't using a delay. The audio matched the video on television. It's always that way with sports telecasts.

I have to admit I'm wondering where the Houston police are in all this. No local obscenity laws broken, only "federal?"

gotta love the status quo of it all

Maybe people are confused because the vocals of songs don't match perfectly.. because of the amplification factor in the stadium? I dunno. I haven't seen anybody arguing the point either way. This Grammy thing is just grandstanding on CBS's part.. and we're here to laugh at them, that's all.

I haven't talked to anyone locally who had anything good to say about any concert they'd attended at Reliant Stadium. The acoustics are horrible for that.

Great place to watch action, lousy place to listen to music.

But I agree with you about CBS and the Grammys. It's all about PR when they just hosted a debauchery scandal that could cost them financially.

Correction...You can't edit out clothing or a t-shirt with suggestive remarks.

Sure they can, if they wanted to. I don't think they want to.

Reliant Stadium? Named, needless to say, after that great Plymouth car that was so reliant!

What is South Park?
Just kidding, since I am aware it is a cable TV show.
My child has never seen it, however.
Network broadcasts or as I call it, free TV, has or used to have, certain rating standards, generally at the PG level.
If they want to broadcast on free TV, they should be forced to keep it that way.
If you, or anyone else want more choices and programs geared to adults and rated R or higher, that is entirely your right to decide, since I dont have to pay for it, you do.
If CBS does not want to abide by FCC guidelines for free TV, they are free to remove themselves from those particular airwaves.
I am also free to completely turn off my TV, but stunts like this are why we have ratings and guidelines in the first place.
I should note that I did not watch this game.I like football, but for the past several years, the commercials and the halftime shows have included more sex and adult inuendo and foul language than I want to explain to my child while watching TV.
My choice of course, but I wish someone would explain to me why this should be so, given that the idea of FCC broadcast standards are supposed to be followed.

CBS Using Tape Delay on Grammy Telecast

By DAVID BAUDER
AP Television Writer

(AP Photo/Elise Amendola)
Following Janet Jackson's surprise breast-baring on the Super Bowl halftime show, CBS said Tuesday it would institute a video delay system to avoid any recurrence at Sunday's Grammy Awards.
CBS technicians were scrambling to invent the software - something more than five-second audio delay the network has used to bleep out swear words, like when Eminem performed on the Grammys two years ago.

Meanwhile, CBS may ask that Jackson and Justin Timberlake be banned from the Grammys if the network concludes the musicians fully intended to give Jackson the extra exposure on Sunday, said a network executive who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Variously referred to as "Nipplegate" and the "bra-ha-ha," the one-second Super Bowl flashing continued to cause reverberations Tuesday.

MTV boss Tom Freston, whose network produced the halftime show, bitterly complained about being "punk'd" by Janet Jackson, and Federal Communications Commission chief Michael Powell said the entire show angered him.

At the end of their duet Sunday, Timberlake snatched off part of Jackson's bustier on stage, revealing a breast clad only in a sun-shaped "nipple shield" to some 89 million viewers.

Jackson's spokeswoman, Jennifer Holiner, said a red lace garment was supposed to remain when Timberlake tore off the outer covering. But widespread questions remained about the intent.

Timberlake, who is nominated for five Grammy Awards, is scheduled to perform on Sunday's telecast. Jackson is supposed to present an award.

Whether they appear or not, CBS censors will have their fingers on a new delay system.

"Unfortunately, we cannot count on those who appear on our air to live up to our standards," said Martin Franks, CBS executive vice president.

Technicians were trying to come up with something more viewer-friendly than just fading to a blank screen if they want something off the air, he said.

Even with Christina Aguilera - who kissed Madonna onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards last summer - also scheduled to perform, Grammy producers haven't changed any plans because of the Super flashing, said Ron Roecker, spokesman for the Recording Academy.

"They're musicians," he said. "They're passionate about what they're doing and we can't be 100 percent in control of the action. We don't anticipate there being issues."

CBS faces an FCC investigation into whether the Super Bowl show violated decency laws, with potential fines of up to $27,500. If applied to each CBS station, the fine could reach into the millions.

Powell said Tuesday that the FCC had begun a formal investigation, and a letter was sent to CBS. "It's well under way," he said.

All five commissioners expressed concern about the Super Bowl broadcast, but Powell declined to speculate on what the FCC would do once the investigation was finished. "I'm not going to try to prejudge the outcome," he said.

Powell said he wasn't happy with the halftime show in general, which featured performances by Nelly and Kid Rock before the bump-and-grind duet with Jackson and Timberlake. Nelly gestured toward his crotch, while Kid Rock draped himself in an American flag-designed poncho.

"I think everybody's focusing on the finale, but a lot of what we've heard in terms of complaints and the breadth of the investigation is a little broader than just that incident," Powell said on ABC's "Good Morning America. "I personally was offended by the entire production."

Freston, chairman of MTV Networks, said he welcomed the FCC's investigation, which he said will prove that the show's producers and broadcasters had no prior knowledge of the stunt.

"We were really ripped off. We were punk'd by Janet Jackson," Freston said, referring to MTV's reality show that makes celebrities the butt of practical jokes.

Judy McGrath, MTV Networks group president, wouldn't comment on whether Jackson's stunt would have repercussions for her in the future on MTV. The singer, who has a new album out next month, was named MTV's first "icon" in 2001.

___

AP writers Seth Sutel and Nekesa Mumbi Moody contributed to this report.

On our local ABC affiliate they are reporting that the nipple ornament was purchased in Houston on Friday evening at a cost of $120. Miss Jackson's people had been looking for something like that. Also, her costume was made in Houston last week.

She's supposed to make an offical statement in a few hours, what ever that means. I'm sure she will surround herself with all of her loving brothers and talk about being misunderstood.
