Warrant Issued for Ga. Raccoon Killing

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- A judge issued an arrest warrant Thursday for a University of Georgia student accused of killing a raccoon that was then skinned, burned and eaten by members of his fraternity.

Judge Patricia Barron said she was disturbed by the allegations and ordered Erik Robert Zimmerman's arrest on charges of animal cruelty.

Zimmerman told police he saw the raccoon near a trash container the night of Dec. 12 and hit it with a traffic cone to scare it away. When it did not run off, Zimmerman shot the animal with a pellet gun. A fraternity brother skinned it, and another ate some of it after the meat was burned.

Animal control officer Kim Winter said Zimmerman should have contacted authorities when he saw the raccoon.

Guess I won't be getting a coonskin cap anytime soon.

That's 'cause you haven't looked on Ebay! (grin)

Besides, it was a raccoon! That's a Southern delicacy! He should use a freedom to express his heritage as a defense.

Dang right!

Now if had been a possum, such action would invade the privacy and integrity of my favorite cartoon character, Pogo Possum. Pogo occasionally narrowly escaped being eaten as Possum Pie by Seminole Sam and other rascals.

Or was it Deacon Mushrat who was almost eaten?

Well, actually it was both Pogo and the Deac who escaped with the skin of their respective teeth.

I never cared for Mushrat stew anyway.

The raccoon is a game animal in most States, requiring a license to hunt it and specifying open dates and firearm requirements. Probably at least three violations.

So why didn't they charge him with one of those violations instead of cruelty to animals? Something smells here (besides the overcooked racoon meat).

Pogo Possum??

lol...that goes way beyond showing your age :-)

When I was a kid, I once found a plastic figure in the basement and had to ask who the funny looking guy was.

I was told it was Pogo and belonged to my grandfather.

Good thing they did not eat a dog.

I think the Cherokee tribe used to have a taste for dog.

"Never even NOTIFIED the UN of the problem!!!"

Those unilateral bastards!! Couldn't they have sent a multi-fraternity group out to talk to the raccoon? Ask him his intentions? This sort of violence is not the way to discourage other raccoons. It's just going to make more raccoons mad at the fraternity and cause escalated trash can foraging!

Nah, I would have really been showing my age if I referred to 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century' or 'Katzenjammer Kids'.

Pogo is fairly recent.

And that is Howland Owl, Beauregard Dog, and Pogo.

Not very good likenesses, though.

30 years after my favorite TV shows are off the air (The Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone Shows) this lady judge goes postal over actions that are normal in my life, burned meat and all.

Under the Walt Disney banner, Davy Crockett captured the hearts of both young and old. The show was also a merchandising pioneer as coonskin caps sold like hotcakes.

Timeline Concerning the Life Of Daniel Boone
1747 Daniel receives his first "rifle-gun" and begins hunting seriously, providing food for the family. He is 12 years old.

Fess Parker, as Davy Crockett, was hand picked by Walt Disney to play the role.

Remember the theme song?

"Born on a mountaintop in Tennessee, Greenest state in the land of the free, Raised in the woods so he knew every tree, Kilt him a b'ar when he was only 3. Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the wild frontier!"

Georgia Raccoon Hunting:

Northern Zone Raccoon:
Oct. 15-Feb. 15;
Daily limit 1.
That area north of and including Carroll, Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Barrow, Jackson, Madison and Elbert Cos. Southern Zone Raccoon:
Oct. 15-Feb. 15;
Daily limit 3.
That area south of Carroll, Fulton, Dekalb, Gwinnett, Barrow, Jackson, Madison and Elbert Counties.

The Coon was in season. The most I see here is a hunting without a license charge.

The difference is raccoons are far more edible than NY City rats.

You don't get out much do you?!

ALL North American and Northeast Asian peoples viewed the "dog" as just another kind of livestock ~ roughly on the order of a chicken, but able to eat only meat and live in a far colder climate.

Dogs are still eaten in many parts of America.

The beach I camped at this past summer was coon infested. I filled a squirt bottle with houshold ammonia solution and nailed a few of the agressive ones, they turned tail and ran the other way.

It wasn't about the tasty Raccoon, it was about the nitwits raising a fuss about it and not the killing of all the rats in NY city.

My Aunt Nell and Uncle Earl served racoon, then known as coon, as often as their sons could catch and kill one. They also cooked rabbits, quail, goose, ducks, dove, fish, and an occasional mud turtle. In their small back yard they raised at least one hog each year, and they butchered and kept it for food to complement their garden vegetables, and the fruit trees that they had been wise enough to plant when they were young.

I can still taste the grapes from their vines, and those little yellow apricots were heaven sent. The cherry tree never disappointed.

The ducks and chickens that lived in the backyard kept eggs on the table, and now and then, they were on the table too.

I can remember a time when they decided to buy and butcher a goat. I'm very glad I was there for that event.
