WASHINGTON, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Actor John Wayne, known to millions of fans as "Duke," is being honored by the U.S. Postal Service with a Legends of Hollywood commemorative stamp.

A full pane of stamps portraying Wayne in a variety of roles from his more than 200 films will be unveiled April 3 a private fundraising event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Proceeds from the Odyssey Ball benefit the John Wayne Cancer Institute in San Monica, Calif. Wayne, whose real name was Marion Michael Morrison, died of cancer in 1979.

"On behalf of the family, I'm grateful and pleased that the Postal Service has chosen to remember our father by issuing a prestigious Legends of Hollywood postal stamp in his honor," said Ethan Wayne, one of Wayne's seven children.

Other stamps in the Hollywood legends series honor Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Humphrey Bogart, Alfred Hitchcock, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

Wayne was previously featured on a U.S. stamp honoring his 1939 role in "Stagecoach."

Good. Now I'll have a sheet of stamps to go along with my John Wayne commemorative medal.

John Wayne certainly left an indelible mark on those who met him. If one travels the West and visits the many sites where a Wayne film was born the traveller will find a hotel room, a bed and breakfast, a room in a private residence, a restaurant that serves as a shrine to Hollywood's most beloved figure. It has been said that in life one is judged by the enemies one makes; that aphorism must be wrong because it is hard to believe that Wayne ever made an enemy.

Great! The first song I learned was Home On the Range. Watching westerns with my dad is one of my sustaining memories.

They're gaining good company with the Duke.

I'd love to see Jimmy Stewart on a stamp, too. Not in one of his Holywood roles, but rather in the Army Air Force officer's cap he wore as a combat pilot in the ETO during WWII. I love his movie roles, but above all I respect his service.

Duke, Jimmy, Bogie... you're sorely missed. At least you're where you don't have to see what passes for "entertainment" these days.

Glenn Miller would be another good choice.

it is hard to believe that Wayne ever made an enemy

Then you must not listen to the Left, do you?

In their practice of tearing down any American icon, Duke is trashed about not serving in WW2, and other outrageous claims.
