Washington -- Gun control hasn't emerged as a leading issue in the 2004 presidential race, but that is likely to change as Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein intensifies her effort to win renewal of the decade-old assault weapons ban, which expires in September.

There is ONE issue in this election. Will the president defeat those who want to destroy us or will the American people get wobbly and allow its worst enemies back into power? Apparently you would choose the latter course. Too bad.

Laz could be right in a way. If Feinstein's rider makes it to him, it is the same as the extension making it to his desk itself. Hopefully, Congress can strip the rider off before it makes it to Bush.

His base is firm. The only fading is from fringe one-issue types holed up in their basements dreading the world who probably didn't support him to begin with. Those who are so foolish as to consider cutting off their noses to spit their faces rarely make a difference in anything.

There are many that vote the person, not party or anything else. They would withhold their votes if Bush were to sign something like this, due to other liberal issues he has advanced and is trying to advance. Along with Bush saying he is for national security, but won't do anything to protect the border with Mexico.

I am not about to start playing pissing games with someone with a name like yours. You don't know me, thus you would not know that I do recognize their tricks. What I can't stand is people that expect us to bend over and "justshutupandtakeit" for whatever the quote of the day is.

There is ONE issue in this election.

Yeah, but it's not the issue you think. It's whether we conservatives exert the only vote we can, by taking it away from those who think they own it, or become as marginalized in the Republican party as Blacks are in the Democratic.

Our 'enemies' will still be there in the election after this one, but we won't be unless we get the 'pubbies attention NOW.

I think the house would pass a different version and it would get taken out of the bill in conference. Since the GOP controls both houses, they will pick the conferees who would no doubt be anti-AWB

I concur. Congress may be gerrymandered to the point where not many house seats will change parties in the future. But Republicans and Democrats for that matter have to consider primary challengers from within their own parties. That makes this an issue of local interest in many Congressional districts and when combined with prevailing national apathy about gun control I think the chances of renewing this legislation in the House are nil.

Here is how it is going to happen.

The bill to protect the manufacturers will leave the House WITHOUT the AWB renewal.

The bill to protect the manufacturers will leave the Seante WITH the AWB renewal.

The two bills will meet in conference committee, where the AWB renewal will be added to what is sent to W.

Amen Big Mack, Amen!!! I could not have said it any better myself. What the hardcore party hacks have forgotten is that it is the health of the Constitution, the WHOLE Constitution that is of primary importance here. Not which group of liars is in charge politically. If the Constitution has become meaningless, then so has the Union. To me, the resolution of the illegal AWB is the single most important issue. With Republicans in control of the House, Senate and the Oval Office, there is no excuse for the continuation of the AWB. NONE AT ALL.

This is the line that I have drawn in the sand...
