Kerry will need a southerner to balance the ticket, not another northeasterner, so Edwards is in the best position of all the candidates right now. Kerry figures his Vietnam experience will carry him, so he doesn't need the general.

Deano is finito.

(Of course, there are lots of southerners for Kerry to choose from, so Edwards needs to position himself carefully if he wants VP. Also, having two senators on the ticket is probably a bad move, so Kerry will probably pick a southern governor.)
