As we near the Feb. 10 Democratic presidential primary in Virginia, it seems an appropriate time for me to update voters in Fairfax County on my experiences investigating the problems with the new voting machines that were used for the first time in the November 2003 general election.

As many of you may recall, there were numerous complaints about these machines. Reported complaints included removal of ballots and/or voting machines from polling places, machine malfunctions, touch-screen irregularities (e.g., highlighted names did not correspond with buttons pushed), precincts falling short on votes, complaints about privacy while voting, no paper ballot trails and the list goes on.

As a representative of the 37th Senate District, I took it upon myself to investigate the machines that were used on Election Day.

I'm not here to debate partisan politics, I will not discuss which party steals more elections than the other, and I won't argue points not directly (or very closely) related on the topic of paperless electronic voting systems. Paperless voting is an attack on democracy, and without being able to rely on the sanctity of our votes, we're toast...

OK, so here is what we discovered today, and I am absolutely astonished. Every day a solution to this paperless voting situation continues to become more and more urgently needed.

Back in November, an election in Fairfax County Virginia was fraught with problems. The story is described briefly on the following page, and that includes links to relevant news stories:

Today's discovery:
In this story I linked above, we have a Republican State Senator that wanted to examine the machines, in the state in which they were prepared for the November 2003 election. Briefly, the Secretary of the Electoral Board in Fairfax County STONEWALLED him until it was too late. Senator Cuccinelli was finally invited to come and watch while they reloaded the systems for the Feb. 10 Democratic primary balloting.

THIS IS CRAP! The machines freaking crashed and burned, and nobody was allowed to examine them?

In case you don't know other recent discoveries, here is what else has happened recently:

• Representative Wexler (Florida) is suing Broward and Palm Beach because the will of the voters could not be accurately be determined in a Jan 2004 special election
• TODAY, Mississippi is re-running an election for a race that crashed and burned in Nov 2003. Once again, the will of the voters could not be determined
• In November 2002, six electronic voting machines used in two North Carolina counties lost 436 absentee ballot votes in the 2002 general election because of a software problem.

Fairfax had older model "paperless voting" machines. They replaced them with newer models.

Coincident with the implementation of the older machines, the Dems quit winning all the votes in Fairfax. Coincident with the implementation of the newer machines, the Dems started winning elections in Fairfax that they didn't deserve to win.

It's not "paperless voting" that's the problem ~ it's the Democrats!

I just used it 5 minutes ago. I hope my first ever vote in anything counted. It was for Al Sharpton he needs some white teenage support.

Maybe so, but I've long been of the opinion that such paperless voting machines facilitated the victory of Robb over North -- certainly in Alexandria, Arlington, and for all I know in Hampton Roads.

North facilitated the victory of Robb over North.

Ollie seems to be a nice enough guy, maybe a little excitable, but apparantly decent.

One day he got to talking about how nasty the "Project 100,000" guys were ~ these were the mentally - "below norm" guys allowed to be drafted.

Some were bad, but there was this one fellow I met in my TOE outfit, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry (Audie Murphy's old unit). He wanted to go to Nam bad, but no one would cut orders to do that. They looked at the guy and said "Hey, he's just Project 100,000 trash. I will not be responsible for sending him to his certain death."

So, this "below norm" guy engineered his own complaint to his two senators and his one representative, and to the Secretary of Defense. Since he couldn't read or write very well, he had to talk others into writing his letters and reading the responses, but he got it done.

He went from being assigned to the most menial of duties to a position of some respectability as a line Infantryman in Nam.

Last any of us saw of him he was an E-6, and on the cover of Life magazine, out doing his stuff, leading people, and showing everybody that he actually was a very capable guy.

So, when Ollie mouthed off about those guys, I reflected back on the one I'd met, and ol'Ollie got written off my personal list.

Ollie did that to a lot of folks, and it wasn't political at all ~ just real deep and personal.

After you do that enough, you can't win elections in Virginia.

Why doesnt Congressman Wexler sue the counties in Florida that didnt allow 2000-3000 votes to count in the 2000 election............................................................................namely the military votes that the Dems didnt allow to be counted and is against Federal law. I want heads to roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My point is, where the local party machinery would not object to fraud (and North was hated by the Arlington and Alexandria Republican leaders), paperless voting machines facilitate disenfranchisement.
