Vietnam-Era Kerry Saw a Military Led by U.N.

By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG

WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 ? The student newspaper at Harvard University has unearthed a 34-year-old interview with Senator John Kerry, in which Mr. Kerry, then fresh out of Vietnam and an underdog candidate for Congress, suggested that he would cede authority over the military to the United Nations and rein in, or perhaps eliminate, the C.I.A.

"I'm an internationalist," Mr. Kerry told the newspaper, The Harvard Crimson, on Feb. 18, 1970. "I'd like to see our troops dispersed through the world only at the directive of the United Nations."

The Crimson, which published a recap of the 1970 article on Wednesday, reported that Mr. Kerry also said he wanted to "almost eliminate C.I.A. activity."

"The C.I.A. is fighting its own war in Laos," he said, "and nobody seems to care."

David Wade, a spokesman for Mr. Kerry, said the comments, which are at odds with the senator's current statements, reflect the sentiments of "a 26-year-old Vietnam veteran angry at the Nixon White House's indifference to soldiers dying on the front lines thousands of miles away."

As a presidential candidate, Mr. Kerry has said that "American security must never be ceded to any institution or to another institution's decision," and has not called for cutting back the C.I.A.

Still, the article is generating attention among Republicans, some of whom cite it as evidence that the senator has been inconsistent on national defense.

"His rhetoric and his record often are canyons apart," said Scott Stanzel, a spokesman for the Bush re-election campaign.

Mr. Kerry, who had overwhelming victories in Tuesday night's primaries in Virginia and Tennessee, is spending Wednesday and Thursday at his home in Washington, with no public appearances scheduled, before heading off on Friday to campaign in Wisconsin and Las Vegas.

"The man needs some rest," Mr. Wade said.

"They made us sit and talk to groups about how it feels when someone makes an insensitive remark," a mid-level CIA officer tells Insight. "It was all very condescending and insulting."

Unbelievable! Political correctness in the CIA.

Do you have a link? I'd like to read the entire article.

Jane Fonda defending John Kerry is a lot like Uncle Ho defending Saddam.

Not much has changed with Kerry in 34 years .. he still thinks the UN should tell the US what to do and how to defend ourselves

I don't recall even Bubba going THAT far in a penchant to have a multilateralist foreign policy.

Bubba may not have said it ... But I'll betcha he thought the same way as Kerry

White, wheat, or rye? (White, of course.) Any way you look at it, Kerry's toast.

Which is exactly what the Clinton Cabal wants.

Wow! What an eye opener that was.

That was the most informative article I've read to date.

It really connected the dots for me and I can fully understand the real causes of our so called "intelligence failure." I'm glad our President is an honorable man and didn't take an easy out by scapegoating the CIA.

I don't know too much about Tenet, but if he is as this article describes him, I would expect that he might "resign" after the election as officials often do before a second term begins.

LOL, good point!

The USSRs national anthem was the "Internationial" originally in French. How... prophetic?

On other issues, Kerry wants "to almost eliminate CIA activity."

Well, turn about is fair play....

I am 34 and a bad hip (replaced at 27) prevented me from my first career choice of the US Army. I have never seen combat? But from what I have heard from my Dad who was at Cam Ron Bay, my grandfather who was in Patton's Third and captured at the Battle of Bulge when his BAR finally ran out of shells, and my Great Grandfather who was shot in France in 1918, it seems rather stupid to get more than one Purple Hart. I do not mean to offend anyone who did get more than one and deserved it. Bob Dole and G.H. Bush got them for some serious injuires and we all knew how they were injuried. Why won't Kerry tell us? Is it becuase if you get shot more than once you look very stupid to get a second and a third time. Is it becuase he got his Purple Hart like Major Frank Burns did. A stray shell landed in the 4077 while he was pealing an egg or drinking coffee and he got burned and had Hot Lips recommend him for the metal. Is it unseal to get multiple Purple Harts? Please let me know.
