The hoax also proved that Newsmax doesn't do their own work, if they were legit they would have verified the photo before going off half cocked with their non-exclusive exclusive.

That's a great point! Media dishonesty and laziness needs to be exposed at every possible opportunity. The fourth estate must never be allowed to sit on a pedestal of omniscience.

I agree in general with your post. I would just make a couple of points.

One, Newsmax wasn't the only outfit taken in by it. A couple of other media outlets almost ran with it, but were caught in time--by Kristinn and a few other people, including my own humble self.

Secondly, in the future, not only will Newsmax shy away from trusting anything posted on FR (or anywhere else on the internet) but so will any other media outlet.

It was a major shot in the foot.

And that would have been bad enough, if it had all been done accidentally. But it wasn't. There is every indication that Registered meant the media to be taken in by this.

If so, that was a MAJOR miscalculation on his part. And he setback this site and the rest of the internet, as being considered as any kind of a trustworthy source for material.

But the internet is NOT a trustworthy source. The media shouldn't use it as one. They should ALWAYS double-check, especially photographs. The things that can be done now with Photoshop are dazzling. Registered is very good, and he isn't even the best.

News often breaks here...but it can't be depended on. Not by commercial outfits that make money selling reliable information.

True enough... but a major news source should never look at the Internet as "trustworthy," only as a fruitful source of information. Then they need to go and do their job.

HLL, yes, we were thinking along the same lines. I'm glad and actually very proud when major news organizations get info from Freepers... but then they need to check it out.

All I know on this entire sordid mess was that I was on the thread when the bogus picture was initially posted. No attempt was made to come clean that it was a fake, but it was exposed by another FReeper shortly after.

My concern is, I received a very disturbing email about the situation, sent to my personal account. The sender did not have the guts to sign their name.

So, if anyone knows who this email address belongs to, please respond and let me know. I would like to know who I'm dealing with here.

You're right, it doesn't look good, to want payment.

On the other hand, that may be how he makes his living. I don't know.

However, I don't think it changes my argument regarding Newsmax's (or other news organizations') responsibility to check the facts even though they want to be first with a "scoop."
