Jazeera TV Says Top Iraqi Baath Party Member Caught

Feb. 15 — DUBAI (Reuters) - Arabic television station Al Jazeera said Sunday a senior Baath Party member on the U.S. list of most wanted Iraqis had been captured. The report from Iraq identified him as Muhammad Zimam Abd al-Razzaq al-Sadun, who was Baath Party chairman and commander of the Baath Party militia in Baghdad and was number 41 on a list of 55 most wanted Iraqis. It gave no further details.

His capture, if confirmed, would bring to 44 the number caught by U.S. forces since the United States authorities issued their "most wanted" deck of cards portraying the faces of those it wished to capture.

Saddam's former lieutenant, Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, is the highest-ranking official on the list who remains at large, coming in at No. 6.

"In Qaim, near the Syrian border about 200 miles northwest of Baghdad, U.S. troops backed by tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles clashed Sunday with Iraqi gunmen. There were no reports of casualties. Residents said gunmen attacked the Americans in retaliation for a U.S. operation against suspected smugglers the day before."

Yeah, sure there were no casualties. Translated, no American Casualties and a whole lot of dead Islamdumbos.

Thanks for posting this interest tidbit.

It is indeed a positive sign that the Iraqi security forces got him. It's too bad that this is lost in the wake of the news from yesterday's battle in Fallujah. I am encouraged, but I'm afraid that the average person looking at the news just sees the negative headlines (very often the negatively spun headlines of good news).

In some ways the most important battle is in the info war, and the good guys are taking a lot of hits right now (this is not in any way intended to minimize the dangers and sacrifices of those who are at "the front" in the war --- it is just that their accomplishments and sacrifices are being undermined by the press and those who seek to profit from the negative.)

There are probably a lot more happenings like this on a smaller neighborhood level that we never hear about.

You've got that right Grampa! I do hope that the troops returning from Iraq now in the rotation get a chance to tell us their side of what it is really like over there.

I think the same is true in the Afghan/Pakistan border area as well. Once in a while a tid bit of information floats to the surface, but you have to be watching for it, and observant. I bet most people know more about how many wisdom teeth GWB had pulled by some dentist in Alabama thirty years ago than they know about how many nuclear weapons have just in the last week or so been secured in Pakistan.

Al Jazeera's more accurate than AP, lol.

Muhammad Zimam abd al-Razzaq al-Sadun is #41, not #47.

Yes, good question. And that prompted me to go to the other AP story and I saw this:

"There were conflicting reports who may have been behind the Fallujah attacks.

Police claimed foreigners -- Arabs or Iranians -- were involved and that two of four attackers killed in the battle had Lebanese identification papers. Rumors spread in the city that an Iraqi Shiite Muslim militia with links to Iran, the Badr Brigade, was to blame."

Note that there rumors spread that it was the work of Shiites. I think this may well point to al-Qaeda (Zarqawi's subsidiary). That 17 page letter from al-Zarqawi spells out how they wanted to spark a sectarian civil war. They pulled off the raid (brilliantly one must say) and then spread rumors that it was done by the Shiites.

If you watch the AP posts, you will see them making multiple revisions during the course of a day for fairly significant events. I don't know if that is the editors doing that without the knowledge of the reporter or just how it is done. But it could be someone in the military ranks that ask them to pull some detail or other .

On Administrative Leave
**  Nine fugitives supposedly hiding in Syria? This seems to have been a smokescreen as FOUR have since been caught in or near Baghdad.
Note2: Also, Al-Rawi (J-of-clubs) was reported by an Islamic newspaper as murdered by Saddam
and Qusay on 4/08/03... one day AFTER the bombing of Saddam at the restaurant.
[IMO, this is MUCH more believable now that we KNOW both Saddam and Qusay survived that restaurant blast]

I think you have a good point about some information possibly being pulled for operational security reasons. Something may be given out on background, and a reporter gets carried away or confused and reports it. The cat's out of the bag in some ways, but the they try to limit the consequences by having it pulled.

What I find irksome is when the good info that does not get pulled is buried deep in an otherwise negative report.

This is interesting because the iraqui's are not bound by the same rules as our guys.

I would hate to be him. Saddam probably has it better, especially since the jail break last week.
