February 16, 2004 -- FORMER President Bill Clinton, stung by how poor a presidential contender Wesley Clark turned out to be, worked aggressively behind the scenes late last week to pressure John Kerry to pick the retired general as his running mate. "The former president has been calling people, including elected officials in New York, saying that Clark would make a great vice-presidential candidate," a well-known Democratic activist told The Post.

It's a funny premise, but since not one source chose to be identified, I get the feeling this is a newsroom joke.

Bubba's not happy unless he's working some scam behind the scenes to bolster his own stranglehold on American politics....Well, that, and being serviced by an intern while he's working some scam.

Why did Clark's camp leak the Kerry affair then? It makes no sense.

Bubba's objective is transparent: he wants to get rid of John F. Kerry so he doesn't interfere with Hillary's 2008 White House plans. The bottom line is if Hillary wants to be President, no Democrat is going to be elected this year. Former President Clinton couldn't make it any clearer to the Democratic Party's new front-runner than by trying to saddle him with the Clinton sock puppet, Gen. Wesley "Mad Hare" Clark.

Maybe as a warning shot. Clark becomes VP candidate... or else they (the clintons, through their minions) disclose some other Kerry tidbits?

The Clintons will do whatever they can to make sure Kerry's unelectable. I do not think Hillary wants to wait til 2012 to launch her bid for the Oval Office.

A lot of DUers actually hope for this scenario. They think most people will be so in love with the Vietnam "heroes".

Why did Clark's camp leak the Kerry affair then? It makes no sense.

Clark leaked because he thought it would help his campaign. He actually thought he could win.

I believe Clinton convinced him of that, to get him to run in the first place.

Why? Not to get a VP nod. I think he's a seat-filler for the Hillary campaign, if she decides to run.

IMO the Clintons lay plans for several different strategies to achieve their goals, choosing the most likely and discarding the rest at the last minute. In this scenario, Hillary announces at the hopelessly deadlocked convention in July. There won't be time to build a national network of campaign staffers. To hit the ground running, the Clark machine becomes the Clinton machine overnight. Surpise! (to everyone, including Clark)

The goal is to keep Clark in the game, so when Hillary runs in 2008, she can put the general on the ticket as a VEEP to shore up her military vulnerability. She doesn't exactly have the reputation of a Margaret Thatcher. If the Clinton game plan succeeds, their 2008 ticket: Hillary and Clark. This will inspire the Republicans to run something like a Ridge and Condi, or Condi and Ridge (or Santorum) ticket. They will need PA and they will need a woman.

I think there is another possibility as well. What goofier pair can you possibly put together? I mean, individually they are dumb, but together you got dumb and dumber. The Clintons want no chance that Clark will spend the next 4 years building up his machine for 2008 and then challenge Hillary. This way they kill two birds with one stone, really destroy Kerry's chance of winning, and have Clark go down in flames. If Bubba is anything he is politically smart. He has to know the big threat to Hillary is Edwards in 08, so he has to make sure he is not the Vice Presidential candidate. Even if they lost, Edwards would most likely come out of this as the man to beat in the Democratic Party in 08. Clark would come out of this as the Bozo of the campaign.

Clark becomes Kerry's VP choice, Dean goes Green, total destruction of the Democratic party, Hitlery comes in and saves the party from ruin. Grand strategery from The Bent One.

Unelectable or under control. Maybe this was a shot across his bow. In any case, voters should know that if they vote for Kerry they're getting a Toon sockpuppet.

Only problem with that theory is that while checking out Polier, any number of news cans of worms could be opened. And while they're definitely arrogant enough to think they can control the spin (think the AWOL bilge), they can't really contol the spin (think the AWOL bilge), thanks in large part to the internet. I don't know what's up with this, though I suspect Polier is the LEAST of Ketchup Boy's skeletons.
