I believe that as long as a candidate is put into nomination, the delegates have to vote for that person on the first ballot. Afterward, they are free.

So, I hearing you saying that a candidate who drops out cannot pledge his delegates to another candidate.
For example, when Clark endorsed Kerry that does not mean the Clark's delegates now MUST vote for Kerry, but instead, they are already free to roam.
