This father should be praised even though the daughter is kinda old to get spanked but at least the AP framed what happened correctly....I was expecting headline, "Father Physically Abuses Daughter".

Usually if you are going to spank a child, it's best to do it right away and get it over with. But it was a mistake to do it at school. Lucky the school authorities seem to be pretty sensible.
On the other hand, this is a lot better than NOT disciplining a child at all, which is pretty common these days.

The problem, really, is why is this news? Why is the AP covering this?

my opinion:
don't reprimand your children in front of their peers -- at least not in way that calls undue attention to them.
high school is too old for a father to physically discipline his child. she's becoming a young lady and lines must be drawn that repsect that.
it's a strikeout.

That was just stupid. Does he expect to gain her respect by humiliating her in front of classmates? I don't care what she did to disrupt the class. There are other ways to deal effectively with it. He sounds like a real a-hole. Maybe she learns her unorthodox behavior at home.

I don't agree that the father should be praised. I firmly believe in disciplining children, however, doing this to a teenage girl in front of a class is extremely inappropriate.
I have teenage daughters and I would never do something like this to them. Plus, spanking at that age is not a good idea IMO.
There are plenty of other ways to discipline children like this.
The girl could have been made to write an apology letter and read it in class, or any number of other things.

To prevent such a matter like this from happening in the future, I selflessly volunteer my spanking services to all unruly high school girls.

Whew! I thought it was another moronic teacher and some sex scandal.

What about Teachers Who Abuse Their Student-Children. My dad taught just about everything in my tiny little high school. It wasn't always pleasant. I hated being in his classes.

This is a little too bizarre to simply fall into the biolerplate "spanking or not" debate.
I can't help surpressing a chuckle at the absurd scene described. I'm picturing Monty Python meeting "Fast Times from Ridgemont High."

oh come on. The father spanks the daughter for disrupting the class? The father's act was far more disruptive than anything the girl could have done in the class. He should have called her out into the hall and discussed the situation with her - if a high school kid hasn't "gotten" it yet on proper behavior, a spanking certainly isn't going to do anything. Take away her car, her phone, her radio and her social life for a few weeks and see if that doesn't in fact correct her attitude.

If he had filed suit against the teacher and the school for being mean to his little sweetheart, it wouldn't even have made the papers locally.

I'm not opposed to corporal punishment at all. I am, however, not in favor of the way this was handled by the father.
Such disciplinary activities should be done in private, not in front of a classroom of the girl's peers.

Why? He probably disrupted the class more than the girl did in the first place.

Spanking a teenager in front of her classmates? The guy sounds like a first-class schmuck who probably was at the receiving end of embarrassing (and public) ass-whoppins when he was her age.

I firmly believe in spanking in the context of a normal loving family relationship. However, if you have to spank your kid after he or she is about 7 years old, you have already failed.
My wife and I agreed on a few ground rules when we had kids:
- Spanking only for repeated, defiant, willful disobedience after warnings of the consequences, or when the child did something that could cause immediate physical harm to himself or someone else.
- Spanking only with the open hand and only upon the buttocks
- No "wait till Dad gets home", but spanking immediately if called for.
- No pulling down pants
- No spanking in front of others (including siblings)
- No spanking when too angry to control ourselves
- Spanking hard enough to cause pain, but not so hard as to cause injury
- Always explaining in an age-appropriate way what the spanking was for, and how they could have avoided it.
- No spanking before age 1 or after age 6
If I may say so, this method has produced two very well-adjusted, well-behaved, pleasant children. We have probably had to spank the kids less than a dozen times each.
