Washington -- Proponents of Sen. Dianne Feinstein's decade-old federal assault weapons ban accused President Bush on Wednesday of using political sleight of hand to break his promise to support their bid to reauthorize the legislation for another 10 years.

As the Senate started debating a bill that would grant gun manufacturers and dealers unprecedented protection against almost all civil lawsuits, the White House issued a statement of policy saying the president didn't want any amendments to the bill, which is a key priority for the National Rifle Association and its allies. Since proponents of the assault weapons ban say their best and perhaps only chance of getting the law renewed is as part of the bill on blocking lawsuits, they cried foul.

"No doubt this is a campaign issue,'' Feinstein said at a Capitol news conference. "The people of America have to send a resounding and clarion call'' that they want the assault weapons bill renewed.

Besides the fact that you are full of caca about what the people of American want, Diane, how could this possibly be used as a campaign issue against the President?
You fool - the folks who want the ban are the Dumbocrats in the first place!

"The president is breaking the promise he made during the 2000 campaign to support the assault weapons ban,'' charged one of Feinstein's co-sponsors, Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y. "This is a flip-flop if there ever was one.''

You dolt! The president said he would sign it, if it ever made it to his desk. He never promised to do the heavy lifting.

What a crybaby.

forgive my parsing. Bush said he would sign it, he did not say he would activly campaign and support it.

"Feinstein... said 'this president ... has not to date lifted a hand to help us.'"

And how does that compare to all the help you've given him this year, Dianne?

If he doesn't want amendments he should say he'll veto anything but a stand alone bill. Or he can sign a bipartisan compromise and move back to Crawford, it's up to him.

(Cupping hands behind ears) "Oh, are those 'clarions' I hear, Dianne? I could have sworn that was the sound of people laughing at you!"

Here's part of an email from a VA gun rights list to which I subscribe. Your efforts to knock some sense into the GOP and the President are working!

[Allen's aides are saying he is listening to constituent input on the AWB ban and is considering their input right now. THAT IS A STEP IN OUR DIRECTION! He was saying he was FOR it before. Now he is suddenly listening to constituents for direction. YOU ARE CHANGING THE POLITICAL WINDS, GUYS!

Senator Warner's aides sounded exhausted from what I am hearing.

The President late yesterday put out a press release asking the Senate to not put ANY amendments on the Gun Manufacturers protection
bill! The President is clearly feeling that wind that is blowing and he is finally realizing that we are serious when we say we will not walk, but run, away from him next election if he signs an AWB!]
