HOLLAND -- The Herrick District Library Board on Thursday voted to amend its prohibition on firearms in the library to conform to state law, which allows residents to carry concealed weapons with a state permit.
"I don't think we should have guns in the library," board member Barbara Osborn said before the vote.
The change was part of a general update of library rules.
Board members had expressed frustration with having to accept guns in the library at the January meeting, but concluded the library rule had to be changed to meet state law.
The board also eased up on the prohibition of cell phones in the library. Use of cell phones is now discouraged, but not banned.
"It's the manner people use the cell phone that is the problem," said Library Director Tom Genson, noting that ringing cell phones and loud conversation are what disturbs the library.
"People who quietly and discretely use their cell phones do not create a problem," Genson said. "People who disturb the library with cell phone calls will still be asked to move to the library foyer for their call."
Board member Eileen Talamantez was the only trustee to vote against the change.
"To me it's very distracting," Talamantez said. "It think it's rude."
The board also reaffirmed its policy to have Tulip Time Klompen dancers remove their wooden shoes when entering the library because the shoes snag the rugs and leave wooden slivers.
A proposal to allow coffee and beverages in the main library was also voted down.
I kinda see their point.
That's descrimination! You can't ban persons of Dutch descent. This would never play in Central PA...
You guys can laugh, but I come from a Dutch town where we in the high school band marched in authentic Dutch costumes including wooden shoes and they will completely RUIN your carpet! Especially if you're marching on the street when it's wet- they just shred to pieces. We did the Rose Bowl parade in 93 when I was a senior and it was 7 miles. We could barely walk after that!!
Wooden shoes are actually not TOO bad if you wear at least 8 pair of socks with foam in the right places.
Fortunately, these perps won't be able to run very fast.
What an idiot.
Does she really think that her "not wanting guns in the library" is going to stop bad guys from carrying them?
Anyway, she has no moral or even legal justification for banning Americans peacably carrying guns from her library.
So Hollands library officials are chagrined because they cant stop guns from invading the childrens sections of their libraries.
The media certainly do a magnificent job of getting people to look upon guns as evil, dangerous things that do not belong in the hands of average citizens.
Actually, quite the opposite is true. If handguns were to be magically outlawed in this country tomorrow, criminals would still possess them and crime would soar astronomically. This is not opinion or theory; England and Australia have both done exactly this with exactly these results.
Persons carrying weapons use them in this country every day to stop or prevent crime in numbers so great that most people would simply not believe them. That you never hear of such stories is eloquent testimony to the power of the media and their determination to never publish anything positive about firearms.
Handguns are carried by citizens in over 30 states in America, with the number of states continuing to rise. Handguns have been carried by citizens in Michigan since July of 2001 around 81,000 according to Michigan State Police figures and problems with citizen carry have been so minor as to be completely insignificant.
So the mom or dad sitting next to you in the childrens section of the library may very well be packing heat, but you will never know it; however, you may rest assured: the weapon he or she carries is not a land mine or hand grenade; it will not suddenly go off and you and your children are all the safer because that mom or dad has gone to a great deal of trouble and expense to exercise his or her right to carry that weapon just in case.
Lol, I'm cracking up....too funny. The thought of funning in wooden clogs just is toooooo much.
