Catholics Can't Back Laws Contrary to Life, Insists Pope
VATICAN CITY, FEB. 29, 2004 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II reminded the faithful that a lawmaker who considers himself a Catholic cannot support laws that are against life or marriage.
"I think it is opportune to recall that the lawmaker, and the Catholic lawmaker in particular, cannot contribute to formulate or approve laws contrary to the first and essential norms that regulate moral life," the Pope said when receiving Carlos Luis Custer, Argentina's new ambassador to the Holy See.
These principles, the Holy Father indicated, are "expression of the highest values of the human person and proceed, ultimately, from God, supreme lawmaker."
John Paul II called for respect for the "value of human life itself," from the moment of conception. "No one can claim for himself the power of violating" the right to life, he said.
The "other pillar of society" that every lawmaker must defend "is marriage, union of a man and a woman, open to life, which gives place to the natural institution of the family," the Pope added.

They will continue to ignore the pope because they are allowed to get away with it. As long as the Vatican does nothing to enforce their words, their words mean nothing to these people.

I think it's safe to say that the bishops have the go ahead for excommunicating non-Catholics pro-aborts who call themselves Catholic.

Unfortunately excommunicating the likes of Teddy Kennedy, Tom Daschle and John Kerry would be a waste--they have long since excommunicated themselves from the Church.
However, the Bishops should not let them get away with calling themselves Catholic and read the riot act to clergy who would support them.

You may want to do a piece with Kerry on his Catholicism and his voting record on abortion and homosexuality. There is a good pic of him on Ash Wednesday.

At the very LEAST they could print their voting records in their diocesan newspapers and chastise them in there. It's a shame that our bishops are so quiet. Money and federal grants talk.

We need much more than just words on this matter. Plenty has been said already. We will be be better off when ACTION starts to be taken. There is no reason why the John Kerrys and Ted Kennedys of the world should still be allowed to call themselves Catholic, not to mention Christian. Sadly, I have the sneaking suspicion that some Catholic bishops are slow to take action because they sympathize in one form or another. I personally believe that no action is taken in regards to them because some of that sympathy extends to some in the Vatican (although most certainly not to the pope or orthodox clergy there... I believe they are not in the position to react without serious political ramifications).
We must pray that the Catholic Church will soon work to weed out some of the chaff among its wheat.

John Paul II reminded the faithful that a lawmaker who considers himself a Catholic cannot support laws that are against life or marriage. Gee, isn't it a little late? Like 40 years too late for marriage, and 30 years too late for abortion.

Pope urges authorities to stop gay marriages
VATICAN CITY (AP) Pope John Paul II again stressed his opposition to gay unions today, saying they degrade the true sense of marriage between man and woman. He urged Catholic and non-Catholic authorities alike to stop approving them.
It was the second time in a week that John Paul has raised the issue, which is making headlines in the United States as a national debate arises from a decision by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court that prohibiting same-sex marriages violated that state's constitution.
In his comments, John Paul said a family based on marriage between man and woman was a pillar of society that justly had rights and duties specific to it.
He urged all public authorities, but particularly Catholic ones, to stop approving such laws, saying they shouldn't contribute to legislation that is contrary to "the primary and essential norms that regulate moral life."
Authorities must instead protect laws that favour the family ``knowing that they promote a social development that is just, stable and promising."
The Pope made the comments as the new ambassador of Argentina to the Holy See presented his credentials. In 2002, the city of Buenos Aires passed a law extending certain civil rights like health insurance and pension rights to same-sex couples the first Latin American city to adopt such a measure.
Last year, the Vatican launched a global campaign against gay marriages in a bid to stem the tide of widening legal recognition for same-sex unions in Europe, North America and elsewhere.
The issue has been in the headlines in America in recent weeks as gay couples rush to get marriage licences in cities like San Francisco and New Paltz, N.Y., where there has been a legalization push following the Massachusetts court decision. At the same time, the debate has spilled into the U.S. presidential race with President Bush saying this week that he would back a federal constitutional amendment to bar such marriages.

Ironically, even the Bishops who forbade priests to give Communion to pro-abortion "Catholic" politicians didn't forbid giving them ashes on Ash Wednesday. But then anyone can receive ashes if they want to. You don't even have to be a Catholic.

Are there any Catholic politicians that do back life? Kerry, Kennedy's, Schwartzneager, etc. don't. In fact the majority of Catholics are Demoncrats. I hope this man stirs their conscience but I have my doubts ... Catholic or not, power is an aphrodisiac and most can't resist it.
