PETA ad to go up before Easter meant to generate compassion for animals Posted: March 1, 2004 1:00 a.m. Eastern

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is preparing to put up what they call "faith-based billboards" before Easter, one of which features a photo of a pig and the caption, "He died for your sins – go vegetarian."

PETA links pigs to Jesus in billboard campaign

PETA says the obvious reference to Jesus Christ's crucifixion is meant to generate compassion for the countless animals killed in the meat-eating culture.

"We have a number of faith-based billboards," PETA spokesman William Rivas-Rivas told WND. "We certainly plan on using [the pig ad] for the Easter period."

Rivas-Rivas says there are people who "always voice their concern" about the group's controversial billboards, but he wasn't too worried about opposition.

"All our faith-based billboards are meant to promote compassion," he said, "compassion for all God's creatures."

The spokesman claimed the organization always gets "huge spikes" in traffic at its vegetarian website, goveg.com, whenever the ads go up.

"I think it is having a success," he said of the ads.

Rivas-Rivas wasn't sure where the new billboards would be placed this year. Last year, PETA placed several religion-oriented ads in different communities, including the pig billboard.

Some outdoor-advertising firms declined to run the ad last year. According to PETA's website, a representative from a Charlotte, N.C., company said at the time, "It makes it look like Jesus was a pig."

Bruce Friedrich, PETA's director of vegan outreach, countered: "Today's factory farms and slaughterhouses are the embodiment of violence, bloodshed and exploitation. "Christians can extend the message 'God is love' to animals by not eating them."

A spokesperson for the National Pork Producers Council called PETA's billboard plans "just ludicrous."

Said the organization's Kara Flynn: "These billboards don't lend credibility to what PETA is saying."

Flynn commented if the group planned to post the billboards in Iowa, which is the nation's largest pork-producing area, the ads would "fall flat."

"[Iowans] have a great knowledge of the truth about what is done to ensure the welfare of animals," she told WND. "Putting the billboards up in farm country is not very persuasive."

faith-based billboards?
These people are equating the life of a pig to the Death of Jesus Christ for our sins?

Hell awaits.

Dear PeTA:

As a direct result of your advertising campaign, I hereby vow to buy the whole ham for Easter this year, rather than just the half.

And bacon too. Lots of bacon.

It just goes to show how whacked out this group really is. They will destroy themselves without any help from opponents.

I think I'll have ham for Easter as well, and leave the bone outside their National Headquarters for the PETAphiles to contemplate.

Is factory farms to which PETA mainly objects, or meat eating itself? Clearly it's the latter. There are a multitudes of carnivorous and omnivorous animals (of which are one)who prey on other animals. Are we to be disqualified to do the same for our sustenance because we have the ability to raise animals for our convenience and to obtain alternative (veggie) food? Personally, I favor meat with vegetables. The foregoing notwithstanding, I still would favor more humane treatment of farm animals (factory or otherwise).

That is a fantastic idea. We should all mail pig parts to the peta headquarters. Nothing illegal with that. i hope they don't rot too much in route.

And summer is just around the corner...manatee steak season!

Jesus as a pig? And since the PETA orgainzation is in truth a religion, with all animal life held to be holy, eating pork would be a form of taking Communion....

Oh, man, I had not realized their theology had evolved so far.

Here is a decent slow-cooked Ham recipie...
I made this for Thanksgiving last year- It's pretty good.
I got it from the show "Good Eats".
I thinned some of the glaze and used a cajun injector.
I also used more Bourbon (Wild Turkey) than 1 oz.

City Ham
Recipe courtesy Alton Brown

Recipe Summary
Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 6 hours
Yield: 10 to 15 portions, depending on size
1 city style (brined) ham, hock end*
1/4 cup brown mustard
2 cups dark brown sugar
1-ounce bourbon (poured into a spritz bottle)
2 cups crushed ginger snap cookies

Heat oven to 250 degrees F.

Remove ham from bag, rinse and drain thoroughly. Place ham, cut side down, in a roasting pan.
Using a small paring knife or clean utility knife set to the smallest blade setting, score the ham from bottom to top, spiraling
clockwise as you cut. (If you're using a paring knife, be careful to only cut through the skin and first few layers of fat).Rotate the ham after each cut so that the scores are no more than 2-inches across.
Once you've made it all the way around, move the knife to the other hand and repeat, spiraling counter clockwise.
The aim is to create a diamond pattern all over the ham.
(Don't worry too much about precision here.)

Tent the ham with heavy duty foil, insert a thermometer, and cook for 3 to 4 hours or until the internal temperature at the deepest part of the meat registers 130 degrees F.

Remove and use tongs to pull away the diamonds of skin and any sheets of fat that come off with them.

Heat oven to 350 degrees F.

Dab dry with paper towels, then brush on a liberal coat of mustard, using either a basting brush or a clean paint brush (clean as in never-touched paint).
Sprinkle on brown sugar, packing loosely as you go until the ham is coated.
Spritz this layer lightly with bourbon, then loosely pack on as much of the crushed cookies as you can.

Insert the thermometer (don't use the old hole) and return to the oven (uncovered).
Cook until interior temperature reaches 140 degrees F, approximately 1 hour.

Let the roast rest for 1/2 hour before carving.

*Cook's note: A city ham is basically any brined ham that's packed in a plastic bag, held in a refrigerated case and marked "ready to cook", "partially cooked" or "ready to serve".Better city hams are also labeled "ham in natural juices".

"He died for your sins"

Seems somewhat inappropriate to bandy scripture in this context, but here's another;

Unless you eat of his flesh, you have no life in you.
(Not that big on pork, but sometimes the smell of bacon in the morning . . .)

That said, what the hell, here's another one;
Kill and eat.
