SACRAMENTO - The California Highway Patrol on Friday released a sketch of the so-called Interstate 580 sniper.
Victims described the suspect as a white male driver in his early 30s with short or balding hair, who drove a dark-colored or black American-made pickup truck, CHP spokesman Sgt. Wayne Ziese said.
The CHP has been heavily patrolling I-580 trying to locate the suspect in the shooting of eight cars late last month between the East Bay cities of San Leandro and Dublin. The cars were punctured by bullets, but no passengers or drivers were injured.
Ziese also said Friday that CHP investigators have eliminated a suspect they visited in Sacramento earlier this week.
Federal Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms investigators are processing the evidence obtained from the damaged vehicles. While the results of the tests have not been released, the agency has determined that the same caliber firearm was used in each of the eight confirmed sniper-related shootings.
"All eight vehicles have been linked by similar rounds that could have come from the same or similar weapons," Ziese said. "It's a small caliber gun like a 22, could have even been a 25."
Anyone with information about the shootings is encouraged to call 800-835-5247.
