Florida House Speaker says he would consider gun range bill

(Tallahassee-AP) -- House Speaker Johnnie Byrd says he would consider a proposal to make gun owners pay for the cleanup of shooting ranges that have resulted in environmental damage.

But Byrd was quick to point out Friday that the idea did not come from his office.

Byrd said Thursday that some sort of charge levied on ammunition or guns could be one of the primary sources of money for the cleanups.

A House bill would give people associated with the ranges immunity from environmental regulators' lawsuits for pollution caused by bullets.

The state would be responsible for the cleanup. But the bill doesn't specify where the money would come from.

A similar bill passing through the Senate is accompanied by another bill that would create a trust fund to pay for the state required clean up.

This is another way the left is going after gun owners and their guns.

If the ammo left in the berms is a hazard, so is every civil war battlefield. And, they still find solid bullets on those battlefields, the lead is not the quick to back into the earth.

The EnviroNazis tried this gambit at our Range here in Scarborough, Maine trying to shut us down, after the "noise" complaints didn't work (the range is located between Portland Inernational Airport and the Beech Ridge Speedway, both of which were here long before these socialist granola-crunching Yuppies landed here from the big cities and immediately started taking everything over).

We had some big environmental testing lab come in and run all sorts of soil tests in and around the impact berms - the verdict was that it would take something like 3,000 years for any significant level of lead to contiaminate the aquifer.
In the event that the greenies ever prevail, it would have to be cleaned up before someone could build or make a golf course on the land etc. - but no reason to stop shooting anytime soon.

We were going to use old tires to build up a backstop once, but that would be environmentally verbotten, even if they were completely buried. So it seems that tires are more of an environmental problem than bullets.

But that won't stop the peaceniks from trying to shut us down with that ploy whenever they think they can frighten enough ignorant & gullible people with it.

There are probably tons of lead still spread all over the South from the "Misunderstanding" of 1861-5, and every now and then someone turns up some still - live unexploded ordnance!

But that does not seem to prevent society from building condos and strip malls over the sites where so much of this lead was sown - and blood was shed - all those years ago.

Lead has to be amongst the most insoluble elements. When I worked as a chemist I tried to dissolve it in boiling nitric acid. I got nowhere fast.

IIRC, magnets will only work on something made out of iron. The majority of naked lead comes out of rimfires, shotshells and black powder guns. Virtaully all high-powered rounds have the lead almost entirely surrounded by copper jackets. I can't say I went digging in berms to say what happens in terminal ballistics when high-powered projectiles impact in dirt.

Good quality indoor range backstops will actually slow the round and deposit the bullet in a bucket. The American Shooting Center in San Diego uses this type. The lead is collected a couple times each week and returned to a recycler to make new bullets. The spent casings are swept and passed to a reloader as well. Steel casings are separated with a magnet and recycled for the metal content. Brass casings are cleaned and separated. Some are resold at gun shows. Some are reloaded. I'm not sure how the brass casing are separated from the non-reloadable aluminum casings

The selective harassment by the State, at the behest of and in collusion with a group of leftist fruitcakes (some of whom live near the gun range) was so egregious and capricious that I can't believe the gun club (who ended up spending thousands of dollars in legal fees to get the commies off their backs) didn't have a legal case against the gun-grabbing goblins and their cohorts in the State government.

But, as usual, everyone wants to "Move On"... and "Find Closure"... and "Get On With Our Lives"... and as a result, leftist tyranny goes on apace, unabated and unpunished.

I think whoever is doing this across the country is organized and financed by McKelvey, Soros, or another such perfidious goblin, and that the entire gang should be prosecuted under the RICO statute.

And for my part... they've already taken my life away with their depradations upon my rights - I have no life left to "get on with". I'll "Find Closure" when I see the last one of them twisting slowly, slowly in the wind...
