Why Do Dems Lose in the South? Don't Blame Civil Rights.

Upon signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Lyndon Johnson is said to have told aide Bill Moyers, "I think we have just delivered the South to the Republican Party for a long time to come."

At first blush, these words seem prophetic. Al Gore failed to carry a single Southern state in 2000, and in January John Kerry hinted that he may write off the entire region, with its 161 electoral votes. "Everybody always makes the mistake of looking South," Mr. Kerry said. "Al Gore proved he could have been president of the United States without winning one Southern state, including his own."

If I am not mistaken, the 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed by Republicans in the Senate and opposed by Democrats. I'm not sure why Johnson would think the act was handing the South to the GOP if he believed segregation was still favored.

The south was largly ignored by the liberal elitists of New England and California. They are now comming in to tax us more, take the guns, homosexualize the children, impose atheism, and call people who live in the south hicks.

Very good way to get welcomed.

the only reason they are paying attention no is becuase some tax and spend liberal realized the south has money. No thanks to any government.

One of their problems is that the Dems inpugn and insult Southerners at every opportunity. Particularly Texas.

All of what you said has merit. I can also tell you with certainty that the SOUTH is the last place in the US where the population has the intestinal fortitude to reject "most" PC thinking. We know who we are, and we know what we want from our lives.

And yes, I dare say that we have the BEST race relations when compared any other section of the country. Having spent time in LA, SF, Dayton, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, NY etc etc etc, it amazes me how much "friendlier" all people are to each other here at home (regardless of race).

It is the dim-o-Rats that are the true party of RACISM! Ask Al Sharpton how welcomed he has been in their "primary". Ask JC Watts, Condoleza Rice, or SOS Powell how they "feel" serving with the Republican Party.

How many Blacks or Hispanics do you think live near Terraaazzzaa and lurch (in their palatial Boston digs)?

No question about it. This is just more lies and fabrications spewed forth from an elitist party backed by elitist media.

Thanks for this post shining the light of truth on a very dark and evil subject!

Republicans stand for FREEDOM, DEMOCRACY, and an open world full of peace and freedom loving peoples (including free/fair trade). We are building free nations one-step at a time (Terrorism has forced us to be proactive in this endeavor). The dim-o-Rats are trying to kill the very nation and leader (USA and President Bush) that is spreading freedom to the most dangerous nations on earth. 2004 will be an easy choice for me to make. It should also be that way for any "clear thinking" American!

Kerry will have a hard time off setting the Bush's votes from Baja California, Senora, Chiauaua etc.

And most of the states in the south are right to work states.

And most of the states in the south are right-to-work states.

That is a biggie. Union leadership tends to support the Dems whether their membership agrees or not. Since you don't have to join a union to work in right-to-work states, unions lose a lot of their clout in those states.

Which reminds me of a joke I heard the other day: What is the difference between the Teamsters and the NRA? Both are special-interest groups, but the NRA doesn't collect dues at gunpoint.

Southerners are much more individualistic than northerners, less likely to embrace the collectivist solutions the left always comes with. We see big government as anathema to our lifestyle, government is not benign to us.

I think Gore lost every southern state as much because of fiscal issues as social ones, because Southerners instinctively don't want bigger government.

Living in a state with no state income tax (Florida) is another good reason.

"Mr. Kerry said. 'Al Gore proved he could have been president of the United States without winning one Southern state, including his own.'"

And how did he do that?
He lost all the Southern states, including Florida (or should I say, "Lower Michigan"?) AND he lost the election.

In Malcolm X's autobiography, he said that Goldwater and Johnson felt practically the same way regarding blacks, but at least Goldwater said what he felt.

Also not mentioned is this article is that the South is the most God-fearing part of the country. Southerners properly honor the Lord and accord Him the glory that is rightfully His. Compare that with the militant secularism, ACLU agenda, Christian bashing and pure decadent sleaze of the Democrats!

From 1830 until the present, the South has experienced a Christian revival, which was rejected in the North in favour of Unitarianism, transcendentalism, Rationalism, and secular-humanism. (from the "Theological History of the United States, also cited at Frank Connor, "The South Under Siege, 1830-2000" Kudzu Press, 2001

Southerners are much more individualistic than northerners, less likely to embrace the collectivist solutions the left always comes with. We see big government as anathema to our lifestyle, government is not benign to us. Part of the reason for this, is that we once had our own nation, and that our Christian Biblical worldview is so different that that of yankees and Californians.

We really do need our own nation.

For Southern Independence
