That's a shame. They usually try to look at all of that stuff when they are in laproscopically to decide if they need to open you up. What a shame they missed it in your neighbor's case:-(

Agreed, unlike many of us who had gallbladders removed, it sounds as though he has an infection as well, probably from the ducts being blocked by gallstones. He certainly has a ways to go before he is out of the woods.

Ah, you don't need that with the laproscopy procedure. A little sore in the very small slits they make, but nothing unbearable. I was able to get up and walk around soon after, just no lifting for a couple of weeks. Recovery is quick and pain minimal with the laproscopic procedure.

Don't know for sure with the "big" procedure. Laproscopically, the recovery time was not bad at all. I didn't take any pain medicine, not even an aspirin during the recovery, however i bet JA is having the big procedure with the full cut so I would say he's going to have a full 4-6 weeks and then whatever else he needs to rid his body of infection of any kind.

Storage of bile. Without it, the liver dumps bile right into the digestive track. This is probably why some of us have lingering digestion issues because of the bile dump straight into our systems. It is not fun to run to the bathroom right after breakfast, but from what I understand it is not life threatening either. Instead of storing bile, I dump it.

On that note, pregnancy is a big trigger for many women where gallbladder stones are concerned. I had mine removed 9 months after my first child was born.

Surgery to start at 12 noon EST, and to last a couple of hours.
But I am afraid things don't look so good, because he was still in intensive care and normally they would have waited for him to recover from the pancreatitis, before doing the gallbladder surgery. Maybe he isn't improving and they think they need to remove the gallbladder and get the gallstones, to remove the proximate cause.
I am not a medical professional, so don't take what I say as anything definite, but that is what I've been reading.
Pray he makes it OK, that the surgery is successful, and that he will recover fully and soon.
Here is the AP article:
Ashcroft to Have Gall Bladder Surgery
The procedure initially will be done laparoscopically. But surgeons are prepared to switch to the more conventional open surgery if necessary. The procedure was scheduled to commence at 12 at noon EST and doctors said that it should take about two hours. Most patients remain in the hospital for four or five days after such surgery.

I haven't had a big problem with heartburn either unless I'm pregnant(I'm assuming that is something you don't have to worry about based on your screen name;-)

A lot of people live without a gallbladder, it's pretty standard procedure to remove it, when people get gallstones.
But he is still in the acute phase of the pancreatitis, which in itself is dangerous. If he were healthy and went in for gallbladder surgery, it would be no big deal, but the combination of him still being in intensive care with the pancreatitis and undergoing the surgery is taxing on his system.
I hope he comes out OK.

Thanks for the update. I bet they open him up since it is probably blocked ducts that led to the problems with his pancreas(not a medical professional either, but I read like the dickens when I was going through this). God bless him. Hope he makes it through ok.

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, a gland that secretes digestive enzymes and insulin. In Ashcroft's case, the cause is a gallstone blocking a passage that leads from the pancreas to the beginning of the small intestine
Yes, the blockage is the major issue here......prayers sent

Thanks for clarifying it even further. I had a feeling from previous reading I had done that this was probably going on.
Prayers once again sent for Ashcroft.
