March 12, 2004 -- President Bush wept with 9/11 families yesterday as he helped break ground on Long Island for a memorial to honor those killed in the Twin Tower attacks. Anti-Bush protesters marched outside Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, but the flap over the brief shots of Ground Zero in Bush's recent TV ads seemed far away as hundreds of family members lined up, each with a single white rose pinned to a lapel.

Pres. Bush in his response to 9/11 and his actions in the war on terror is a hero for all of this nation's children and children yet to come.

With God's grace, a second term could make the Bush Doctrine on Terrorism the most important policy for world history in this new century.

Hey, this article didn't give the Anti-War Protesters equal time with President Bush!! President Bush got a badge from one of the widows and the Protesters didn't get anything (except their paychecks from Mrs. Kerry's Tides Foundation). Maybe the Protesters should get something special from FR? Like special commemorative Madrid subway tickets. These protest goons are not innocuous. I teared up reading this too. Watching the one minute of silence in Madrid this morning got to me as well. I am so proud of our President and am saddened by the constant barrage of attacks on the man that kept me sane (and safe) after September 11.

Bush started the day by tending to his conservative base with satellite remarks to the National Association of Evangelicals Convention in Colorado. He used the occasion to issue a fresh appeal for support of his national-security agenda, with a special emphasis on his "compassionate conservative" goals.

The economy is another pillar of Bush's re-election bid and he was carrying his message of tax cuts and trade to Long Island as well.

He takes a 10-minute tour of USA Industries, which makes automobile parts in Bay Shore, N.Y., and hosts a "conversation on the economy," where managers and workers typically extol the benefits of his economic agenda.

Regarding media coverage I have to say for the most part the protestors vs. the supporters were covered more fairly then I have ever seen before. News 12 did a good job giving both sides with more emphasis on the supporters.

The arguement over the ads just is very pathetic to most people.

"What I think is distasteful is that the president is trying to use 9/11 as a springboard for his re-election. It's entirely wrong. He's had 3,500 deaths on his watch, including Iraq," said Doyle, whose 25-year-old son Joseph died at the trade center.

With Republicans holding their political convention in New York in late August, victims said they hope Bush does not make it worse by speaking at the site now known as Ground Zero, which many view as sacred.

"If he does, there will be a protest and it could get ugly," said Doyle.

Bill would extend deadline for 9/11 victims to file claims

A Senate panel today will consider a bill extending the time that survivors and relatives of victims of the September 11 terror attacks have to apply for compensation from a specially established federal fund.

Currently, the deadline for applications is Dec. 22, but there are fears that thousands of the injured and bereaved who are entitled to make a claim but have not done so yet may be shut out unless it is extended.

Bill Doyle, who lost his son, Joseph, in the World Trade Center and maintains an e-mail network of more than 6,000 survivors and relatives, said an extension of the congressionally set deadline is essential.

"I'm sure there are many families who - because of bad legal advice about their eligibility, or not knowing about the deadline or being tied up in legal disputes - will lose their right to claim if the deadline isn't extended," he said. "Wouldn't that be criminal?"

Mr. Doyle estimates that as many as a third of those entitled to apply have not yet done so, although he notes that the fund's administrators say they are receiving more than 180 new applications every week.

The bill, sponsored by Democratic Sens. Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, Charles E. Schumer of New York and Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, is scheduled to be considered by the Senate Judiciary Committee today.

If it passes out of committee, a Senate staffer told UPI, the sponsors will try either to get it to the floor for a vote, or to attach it as an amendment to one of the spending bills that the Senate must pass before recessing for the holidays. Either way, time is very tight.

Congress will likely recess before Thanksgiving, and if the bill does not pass this week, the deadline will have expired before it can be considered again.

Mr. Doyle says he has received e-mails from victims' relatives as far away as Uruguay, India and Israel, inquiring about the compensation fund.

Though the application process is complex and drawn out - Mr. Doyle says it can take many months - the initial application form, known as a 1A, can be filled in by anyone in a matter of minutes.

"I send them forms," he says of those who inquire.

"I tell them all, 'Just get your 1A in,' " he said. "That way their rights [to claim] are protected."

Those who claim from the fund waive their right to sue any U.S. entity, including airlines.

Mr. Doyle says a major factor preventing people from claiming in time is psychological. "Families are still grieving," he said.

But some relatives are tied up in disputes about the administration of the victim's estate. Only the administrator can claim on behalf of the bereaved.
