Poll: Bush Surging, Kerry Stumbling in Race for White House

A new poll released on Tuesday reveals the Bush reelection campaign is strengthening despite months of negative attacks by the Democratic Party.
The CBS News/New York Times poll has several positive findings for Bush as he seeks to win a second term in November.
Bush's job approval rating was at 51 percent while only 42 percent said they disapprove.
This was a 6-point improvement over the numbers in the previous poll taken in late February where Bush's approval rating was 47 percent and his disapproval rating was 44 percent.
Among registered voters in the United States, Bush is ahead of Kerry 46 percent to 43 percent.
This represented a 4-point difference over a mid-February poll that found Kerry leading the president by one percentage point at that time.
A hypothetical matchup between Bush-Cheney and Kerry-Edwards showed the Bush ticket ahead of the Kerry ticket 46 percent to 44 percent.
Incredibly, this is a 10-point swing from the late February poll when Kerry-Edwards led Bush-Cheney by 8 points.
The poll shows that support for Bush is stronger among Republicans than Kerry's support among Democrats.
More than three out of four Republicans (76 percent) say they will definitely be voting for Bush while just 70 percent of Democrats have already decided to vote for Kerry.
Bush is viewed more favorably by Americans than Kerry.
The poll found that 43 percent of Americans view Bush favorably, a 3-point rise since mid-February, compared with 28 percent favorable for Kerry.
For Kerry, this was a devastating 10-point drop in his favorable rating from the previous poll.
Seventeen percent of poll respondents had no discernable opinion of Bush. At the same time, 41 percent of Americans either have never heard of Kerry or have no opinion of him.
According to the poll, most Americans believe Bush says what he means while Kerry only says what people want to hear.
An astonishing 57 percent of Americans say the likely Democratic nominee for president does not believe what he says while only one-third believe Kerry does say what he believes.
Conversely, more than half (51 percent) view Bush as a man who says what he truly believes in his heart.
The poll of 1,286 adults, which also included 984 registered voters, was conducted March 10-14 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The media's done their best to keep this secret. All I keep hearing is how Bush is failing miserably.

I'm sure you all have a caption for this one.

So why does Rasumssen show Kerry with a two point lead in its tracking poll?

You ask me the polling expert?
It's not just that Bush is ahead in this poll, but other of his numbers are also on the upswing, according to this story.

The libbies were not incredibly enthusiastic about him. They only want him instead of Splean because they assumed he would be most capable of beating Bush. Strategic campaign abstractsions are not what fire up supporters.
Plus he boring, very boring. Even though most of the things XXXlinton said were BS and hogwash, at least he wasn't nearly as boring to listen to as John F. Ketchup.

So why does Rasumssen show Kerry with a two point lead in its tracking poll?
Why did Scott Rasmussen miss the 2000 election so badly?
It's way too early to put much credence in polls other than possible trending over some period of time. In 2000, exit polling showed that 30% of the voters made up their mind in the last 30 days with 17% of those making up their mind in the last week. If that holds or is even close then the election is far from being decided at this stage of the campaign.

The last month was as good as it was going to get for John F. Kerry. From here on out, its downhill for him and my guess is he'll slide down to his base of support in the high 30s to low 40s and remain stuck there for the rest of the year, unless something unexpected happens on the domestic or the foreign front to change the picture. With eight months to go, the Bush campaign can't become overconfident or complacent and should fight the campaign as though the President were in fact behind. We need to roll our sleeves up and work hard through the summer to put Kerry away for good.

Meg,,I think I am just constantly worried about what could go wrong. This is as bad as the last election which shocked me at how close it was. I don't think we will ever get a 10 point lead. Five points maybe, but 10 would only occur if John Boy went down fifth ave in NY naked shouting Allah Akbar.

Bush will win in a landslide of Nixonian proportions.
Kerry is already wearing thin and we have just begun!
Not all democrats want a president favored by terrorists and the French!
Kerry is pompous and short with us little people. Just saying you are right does not make it so.
I will be very interested to see what the FEC comes up with ala soros et al.
