On cue, the AP picked up McCain's comments:

[snip] Bush's chief Republican rival in 2000, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Thursday he does not believe Kerry is weak on defense even though they disagree on some issues. McCain, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee and is a friend of the Massachusetts senator, said a discussion of Medicare and other issues should replace negative campaigning.

"He's responsible for his voting record, as we all are responsible for our records, and he'll have to explain it," McCain said of Kerry on "Today" on NBC. "But, no, I do not believe that he is necessarily weak on defense. I don't agree with him on some issues, clearly. But I decry this negativism that's going on on both sides. The American people don't need it, and the end result will be lower voter turnout, particularly amongst younger Americans."  [snip]

The trouble with Kerry's potential foreign policy was demonstrated with recent events in Spain.

Kerry wants the UN to provide national and international security.

If we turn over security to the UN, we have the precarious situation of the UN turning against the US interests. Spain did that by pulling out its troop support in Iraq.

Our national security is essential. We cannot afford, as a nation, place our dependency on any other organization or country. The US must take care of itself.

Kerry's policy in this world of corruption in the UN is just too precarious, too dangerous.

McCain went on to describe his GOP affiliation in this most curious way. "I'm a member of the party of Lincoln, of the party of Teddy Roosevelt." It seemed that he was about to add someone else. The obvious name would have been Ronald Reagan. But no, the most recent Republican with whom McCain was willing to associate himself was in office 100 years ago.

McCain conveniently neglected to mention that in 1912 Teddy Roosevelt left the Republican Party and ran as the candidate for the Progressive "Bull Moose" Party against incumbent Republican President Taft -- thus ensuring the election of Democrat Woodrow Wilson.

Some terms that would describe McCain.

Quisling.

Judas.

Political Whore.

Fellow Travelor.

Fifth Columnist.

Mancurian Candidate (though it might be more appropriate to refer to him as a the Hanoi Candidate).

Hey Arizona! - Vote him out since he's up and left you on his own anyway (ideologically at least).

Bush should have assigned him to some internal, interminable, tedious committee long ago, or made him ambassador to Podunk or something.

If McCain says NO he doesn't get a chance to get on TV and bash the president. So he double deals, equivocates, mutters inanities about the negative campaigning and sneers at the president.

I wonder what his constituents think about him making remarks that basically defend Kerry's defense record. The issue has just been what the RNC and Bush administration decided to focus on to contrast the two candidates. I'd like to know what they have to say about McCain's foot-in-mouth problem too. It's like he's deliberately trying to thwart their efforts.

I believe McCain would indeed seriously consider being Kerry's running mate. Kerry would only ask if his campaign were in a death spiral though - and right now it is not. A Kerry/McCain ticket would be fun for our RINO Arizona Senator for awhile, but a huge headache for Kerry in the long run. McCain would be constantly contradicting, undercutting, overshadowing, backstabbing and generally being as disloyal to Kerry as he is to the Republican Party.

If McCain signs on with Kerry, I think Bush could respond with our own unity ticket - George Bush/Zell Miller. Cheney could step aside for now, and come back as chief of staff in the next Bush Administration.

Everyone is always talking about McCain. I thought it would be helpful to publish his recent voting record.

He has an 84 lifetime rating from the ACU, not bad, but not as good as his fellow Senator Kyl with a 97. And last year his rating was only 75, down from 78 the year before - so he is steadily moving in the wrong direction.

Here are his votes last year:

1. for Estrada
2. against Roe vs. Wade
3. for the "Death tax"
4. against stopping Bush's taz cuts but see number 8!
5. against Bush's budget
6. against the marriage tax penalty
7. for taxing people's dividend income
8. against Bush's tax cuts
9. keep researching nuclear weapons (even Kerry voted for this)
10.against closing military bases
11. against cost saving drugs means tests for medicare
12. for malpractice reform
13.against the US funding international abortion
14.against requiring higher mileage requirements for cars
15.for restructuring overtimes rules
16.against broadcasting controls
17.against federalizing local elections
18.FOR Kyoto!
19.for the prescription drug benefit.

It's an interesting mishmash, he votes for Kyoto, which would wreck our economy, but against cars getting higher mileage? And is solidly prolife, but loves to pick peoples pocketbooks.

Is this a battle between Dean and McCain for Kerry's nod of approval?

Whose support damages Kerry the most - Dean's or McCain's?
