WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush poked fun at his staff, his Democratic challenger and himself Wednesday night at a black-tie dinner where he hobnobbed with the news media.
Bush put on a slide show, calling it the "White House Election-Year Album" at the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association 60th annual dinner, showing himself and his staff in some decidedly unflattering poses.
There was Bush looking under furniture in a fruitless, frustrating search. "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere," he said.
There was Vice President Dick Cheney, a frequent butt of gentle Bush ribbing, holding his fingers a few inches apart. Bush said, "Whenever you ask him a question, he replies, 'Let's see what my little friend says.'"
And there was Bush again, in an odd contortion in front of his national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice. He said he was trying to explain to her the foreign policy of Democratic challenger John Kerry.
Bush showed himself playing cards on Air Force One and cracked that he was on his way to an international summit and using a special deck to help him bone up on the names of the leaders he was about to meet.
His slide show segued into a somber ending, showing a group of special forces troops in Afghanistan at the site where they buried a piece of the fallen World Trade Center in commemoration of the dead from Sept. 11.
The late NBC News reporter David Bloom, who died in April from an apparent blood clot while covering the Iraq war, was remembered. His wife, Melanie, talked of her husband's passion for journalism.
About 1,500 guests attended the dinner.

The clips on our local nightly news out here in Los Angeles actually picked out some of the better moments, but as usual they put their liberal spin on things. One must always mention how many are dead when speaking about Iraq, and one must always mention how many days troops have been in Afghanistan.
'course, never happens for Kosovo...

Gah! The evil Republican slime machine strikes again! Aren't the repeated attacks on Kerry and Democrats just SICKENING?! Look at how he slimed Clarke! What will the most corrupt administration in U.S. history do next I wonder?!?!?
I really hope a /sarcasm tag isn't necessary by now.

Well, one can't be expert at all things and Dubya has set his priorities wisely.

I don't know how the President can be so jovial with people that hate him so much. He can be that jovial because he appreciates that being right is rarely popular.
I think he also has a good grip on a bit of wisdom my grandfather passed on to me: "It's not what you're called, it's what you answer to."

Ha! I just this minute finished taping the whole Bush speech/slide show so my kids and wife can watch it tomorrow. Fox ran it in its entirety earlier this evening and then just ran it again.
Absolutely HILARIOUS!! Dubya has the humor, timing and delivery of a pro.

In doing so he heaps 'coals of fire' on their heads. Now picture Petah Jennings and Dan Blather when you say that....nice imagery.

I'm so emotionally drained after today's rollercoaster 911 hearings (3000+ posts on the live thread) I completely missed footage of the WH correspondents dinner. Great to hear the President was in an upbeat mood. Did anyone notice if C-Span will replay it at some point?

My favortie bit was when he shwoed a picture of himself and Dick Cheney, and both guys had their hands above their heads with their pinkies and thumbs pointing out, and President Bush said "This is the secret handshake we use in Skull & Bones."
I laughed my head off!
He was pretty funny...

Yes, I agree. I don't think these hearings have been bad for Bush, or the country, at all. The clintonistas have TRIED to say Bush is to blame, not us, but, it hasn't worked. Of course, it was way to ludicrous to work, but they tried. That spin isn't making it even in the mainstream media.

I agree thanks for sharing that!
That bit of wisdom obviously comes to us prior to the days of "PC" saturation and mental pollution.
We are now mistakenly told to believe that what we are "called" is where it's at, NOT what we answer to; that the speech is the violation of another's rights, a punishable offense, a violation of "my rights".
Speech alone now, where it used to be said: "Sticks and stones....but names will never hurt me."
Times have changed....for the worse. Your Grandfather had it right, it's "what we answer to" that tells it all. Thanks for sharing that!
And Bush is a great role model for this love in action. He's not letting his enemies or the angry press define him. It is so winsome when the people actually see this. So unlike the politics of destruction that beset these "malignant narcissists" like Richard Clarke [to coin a phrase from Tammy Bruce, _The Death of Right and Wrong_].

That great old southern comic, brother Dave Gardiner, had a line in one of his albums, Rejoice Dear Hearts, that fits perfectly here. "Love your enemies, and drive them nuts."

I have called and made a statement regarding Leslie Stahl and her hatred of America. I suggested that since she was so clearly biased it would have been proper for the station to hire independent investigators to see if Clarke was truthful.

My favorite photo and Bush remarks last night was the one of him on the phone w/a handkerchief draped over the mouth piece: "Hey, John. Cum Lung Lee here. Hope you win!" (I laughed til I cried at this humorous dig at Kerry's faux claim of foreigners supporting his candidacy.)
