Another question that comes to mind is why not fire the rocket at the target in the first place??? A manned scramjet bomber could be launched on warning, and told to abort the mission if it turns out to be a false alarm, but could toss nukes at an enemy from well out of range of anti-aircraft missiles, and have the bombs scream in as fast as an incoming ICBM warhead

Technological hurdles mean it will be decades before such a plane could enter service A couple of generations ago, we went from using biplanes in 1935, to jet fighters in 1945, to the X-15 in 1959
Then again, engineers back then didn't have to deal with all the bureaucracy and paperwork and CYA that we have these days.

This is great stuff!! They ought to retrofit those engines on the SST Blackbird - a very respectable member of the USAF - so we can get back to being decades ahead of anyone else once again.
