Mmmm...I'd love one. Just to the red side of medium rare if you please. With a big Baked sweet potato and a side of steamed asparagus...Oh, and a pitcher of Sam Adams. Thanks ~ Riley
I'll have what he's having, only with a regular baked potato- butter, sour cream and chives, and a cup of weapons-grade, industrial-strength horseradish. ~ Riley
Dang! Guys? Let's do lunch!

One advantage of OS X is that it gets faster on old machines (I have a G3 Powerbook) with each update because Apple continues to optimize the code. So not only do I get a plethora of new features with an upgrade, I also get more speed.Another ADVANTAGE is that the machine and OSX and iLife puts a real barrier to the Offshoring Red Chinese, Gradually becoming re-RED Russians, Curry Indians and Philippines types, ALL of whom seem to have IBM-Microsoft-Intel-HP-etc., etc., etc.
I used to Vociferiously object to an Annual Upgrade Fee as is alleged with Apple, but I've come around...$130 is $10.83 per Solar month, or $10 per Lunar Month...for just the cost of Tampax [tm], we get our very own Insurmountable Protectionist Barrier that stops Offshoring DEAD in the Water!!!
As that Indian said, in that article yeaterday, he doesn't feel guilty at taking American jobs, since American [read WINTEL] companies spread this technology around!!
Seems Steve Jobs is a GENIUS after all!!
$10 per Lunar Month...we gals can live with THAT!!!
And, as if Wintel doesn't carry that poison enough, isn't LONGHORN supposed to "TAKE BACK" certain Multimedia capability in the name of Digital Rights Management???
Microsoft-Intel is for LOSERS!!!

I am also using Windows 98SE. It's a pretty good OS and does many things that XP cannot do.Could you enlighten me? I have Win 98se on our two main machines, but the laptop I bought is preloaded with XP Pro (it's not here yet).
What does Win 98se do that XP won't? We suspect a networking advantage, as our local provider handles the two OSs differently in equipment and cost for broadband service.
Close?

...pop-up blocker (also needed by Mac-users), and spam blocker (which even Macs need) are all FREE. However, they are INCLUDED in the OS-X distribution. Pop-up blocker: simply select the option in Safari (Apple's included browser); Spam: Apple's Mail application has one of the most robust Spam filters in the industry.

I really don't know why your ISP charges less for Windows 98 than for XP. If you get a Linksys firewall router you can hook to your broad-band through that and your ISP won't know what kind or how many machines you have hooked to the broadband modem. Additionally you will have the protection of a hardware firewall.
Please get someone who is good at such things to help you locally. Each setup is different and I barely knew enough to get mine working.
As far as what Windows 98 can do that XP can't, it can run many old DOS programs for starters. It will also support older machines and printers and other things that XP will not.
If you have a bunch of older hardware, as I do, 98 is a good choice. If you have a 486 box, you will have to use 95.

ACtually, it's the other way around. They charge more for Win98 than XP. Higher set up fees and monthly charges.
The old DOS programs and hardware is not really an issue for us so I guess the differences won't matter.
Our two 98se machines are both AMD machines and run great.
Thanks for your reply!

XP reconfigures itself every so often...not to mention allowing a whole new class of ATTACK through the Windows Messinger port [fixable through "Shoot-The-Messinger" program available FREE from Gibson Research...which we did AFTER losing a Hard Drive to an attack!].
If XP is so bloody stable, how come books are now appearing to tell exactly how to "HACK THE XP REGISTRY" to get what you REALLY want???
When was the last time you bought a book with more than 100 Registry "hacks" for Windows 98SE???
Enquiring minds want to know!!!

Thousands of businesses have invested billions of dollars in new software development based on Microsoft's promised Longhorn delivery times and feature sets. Many of those companies will go out of business or lay off employees or outsource work to India because of the continued delays. Put down the crack pipe. That's the most hyperbolic statement I've ever seen written by you. I'm gonna assume that was satire and give you the benefit of the doubt...

Longhorn? That's a cow in Texas right? Yeah, one that can't ever beat the Sooners in the Red River Shootout!

I would have even kept win95 (I had it tweaked perfect for my needs) except I needed USB support.Believe it or not, I would have kept my NT 4 box for gaming had it supported USB.

pop-up blocker (also needed by Mac-users) Not true. This is only the case if you use Microsoft Internet Explorer. If you'd rather keep such garbage off your machine, use Safari. It's a better browser and I have not seen a single pop-up in months.

Yup, there's nothing like renting your OS for $130/year. I have a Windows PC and a Mac with OS X.
Considering what I make per hour, and how much more time I spend keeping the Windows box running, I could pay several thousand dollars a year for Mac OS X and still come out ahead.
If it were not for the proprietary software my company uses, I would jettison Bill Gates' piece of used food today, and go Mac-only.

Windows 95 had a service release that provided USB support. I am running W95b OSR2 when I need to run 'Doze, and I can see eventually needing USB support in the future. However, when I checked on the u-soft site, it stated that the patch for support was only effective for the last OEM-release version of '95. Has that changed, do you know? (C)Uti
