Stab-proof vests for guards nixed

EDMONTON -- Corrections Canada won't let guards at maximum-security prisons wear stab-proof vests because it sends a confrontational "signal" to prisoners, says a department spokesman. "If you have that kind of presence symbolized by (a stab-proof vest), you're sending a signal to the prisoner that you consider him to be a dangerous person," said Tim Krause. "It interferes with what we call 'dynamic security.' We want staff to talk to prisoners, to see how they're doing."

At Stony Mountain Institution only guards in the emergency response unit are allowed to wear the stab-proof vests, said unit manager Linda Garwood-Filbert. The unit is called in to deal with such situations as breaking up a fight or dealing with an agitated inmate.

Kevin Grabowsky, regional president of the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, said the notion inmates might be "offended" by the sight of a guard wearing light armour is a "complete crock."

"Would you ask a cop to take his gun off before going into a domestic dispute, because someone might be offended by it? It's ludicrous," Grabowsky said.

What a minute---why would guards even need stab proof vests? I mean, knives are *banned* from prisons, right? You would think that the law would just take care of the whole issue.

I doubt that the pencil pusher that decided on that has to mingle with the kind and gentle persons that are unfortunate enough to be incarcerated. After all they are victims of society. Sheesh!!!

Amazing. If a law-abiding Canadian citizen owns a gun, the leftists are all paranoid about that person -- merely owning a gun is a threat, etc. They will tell the guowner he is dangerous, antisocial, etc. However, let someone take a gun, commit murder, wind up in a maximun security prison, and the leftists are all eager to declare that the criminal is a fine fellow and everything must be done to make the criminal feel accepted and not judged, and that the criminal must be trusted more than the law-abiding citizen. Amazing.

Well, I think the Canadian Corrections Dept. should remove the bars on the prisons because these barriers are making the prisoners feel trapped. Furthermore, they should not allow the guards to carry any weapons lest the prisoners feel threatened. In fact, they shouldn’t even be calling the convicted criminals ‘prisoners’ because that implies they don’t have the same rights as normal law-abiding citizens. Oh, they don’t have the same rights, eh? My bad!

this is the same corrections agency that REFUSED to let their officers carry guns on OUTSIDE hospital and transportation runs. Corrections Canada is a complete joke.

How about a mandatory "hug session" when the "client" gets a bit out of line. New motto on prison wall..."give them a hug instead of the club".

An guard wishing to create his or her own stab proof vest should contact me free of charge and I will instruct them on how to construct a leather reinforced, chain mail vest that will stop anything shy of a sword / ax.

If metal detectors are a factor, I can also teach how to construct plastic lamealar armor or form fitting reinforced leather.

It's for real. Canada is a lost cause. I wonder how succesful they'll be in recruiting prison guards. If I were those guards, I'd be asking for a huge pay raise.
