Pop Star "Pink" To Play Janis Joplin in Biopic
Cinematic Happenings Under Development (CHUD) ^ | April 2, 2004 | Devin Farachi

4.2.04 By Devin Faraci Contributing Sources: Variety,

Oh, come on now. Look, I’m not one of those people who endlessly bemoans the current state of pop culture (guess what, it’s ALWAYS sucked, you just think sh** was better thirty or forty years ago because all the garbage got left behind and you only know about the quality stuff), and I’m definitely not one of those people who gets up in arms when singers or rappers try acting. Actually, I think William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy alone proved that the real danger to our society is when actors cross over to the recording studio.

Still, the news that Pink will be playing Janis Joplin in a biopic filming this summer in The Gospel According to Janis has really gotten on my nerves. And I’m not that big a fan of Joplin. And I don’t think Pink is all that awful a celebrity. I just don’t think that she has the charisma needed to pull off the part.

She does have the pipes, apparently. Pink has been so successful at aping Joplin’s vocals that she’ll be singing all the songs in the film. The movie will be directed by Penelope Spheeris, who would have been a great choice back in the 80s when she made The Decline of Western Civilization, but now her resume is filled with crap like The Beverly Hillbillies.

There’s a competing Janis biopic, Piece of My Heart, which is being developed for the deplorable squinty eyed beast Renee Zellwegger. That film appears to be getting trumped by this independent production. Whether this Spheeris film is the one that Melissa Etheridge was looking to star in is something I just don’t know, so lay off, will ya?

Some lighthearted news on a slow day.

Janis could sure belt the blues back in the day, but TWO movies about her? C'mon.

Pink better start slopping at the trough if she's going to portray a realistic Janice...

Well, I'm not crazy about Pink playing Janis Joplin, but it could be worse. At least it's not Britney Spears in the role!

It was almost Melissa Etheridge, until her gal-pal (who was supposed to direct the flick) figured out that she couldn't act.

They would have turned it into a Femi-Lesbo fest.

Eww! BAD idea.

If I were doing the film, it would have been in the can a long time ago and would have starred Lili Taylor as Janis.

Not someone whose previous acting experience was a cameo in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (and a pox on the idiot who opted for that title).

I have no idea who "Pink" is.

Back in the late 60s/early 70s, when it seems like rock stars were dying every week - Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Keith Moon, etc., I was convinced that the CIA was knocking them off. Of course, I was young and stupid back then - it never occurred to me that the fact they were all drinking and drugging 24/7 might have been a contributing factor to their early demise.

at least Pink is a working-class girl who has struggled. I think she'll make a good Joplin. She's smarter than the average pop-chick, and has a good work ethic.

if you notice that the majority of the pop stars who died in the 60/70's, most were counterculturalists. if the CIA/NSA etc didn't have a hand in it, those deaths nevertheless didn't hurt the cause (CIA et al)

She's not hard on the eyes, either...

I also heard her say in an interview that when she first went to LA, she carried a concealed gun regularly.

I agree with you. I think Pink will do just fine. I hope the script is decent. She does have the vocal qualities to pull this off, plus the degree of cockiness. I think the casting person was spot on, regarding his / her choice.

Pink's one of the very few modern pop stars whose albums I've actually purchased, and listen to. Her music's actually pretty good...fun to listen to in the car, too.

She's rumored to absolutely HATE Brit Spears, too, which at least shows that she has good taste.

Have you seen her video for her song, "Trouble"? What a hoot!

Yep, I can easily stand her, and only two others...Shakira and Gwen Stefani.

I never cared about Janis Joplin and care even less about Pink.

That photo's a little squashed. Plus, unfortunately, Pink seems to go out of her way to hide or obscure her looks. Were she to grow out of her "punk" phase, and try to appear a a woman instead of a girl, she'd be quite beautiful.
