STORRS, Conn. (AP) Police arrested 35 people after University of Connecticut fans started fires and overturned cars in celebration of the men's basketball team winning its second NCAA championship.
University police said a dozen fires were set outside and two cars were overturned at the Celeron Square apartment complex about 1.5 kilometres north of campus following Monday night's victory.
There were no reports of serious injuries. Campus police reported 19 arrests. State police said they made at least 16. Charges ranged from inciting a riot to breach of peace.
"This is one of those situations we won't tolerate," UConn police Maj. Ron Blicher said. "This is the worst up here in recent memory."
One trooper was injured but returned to duty later in the morning, State Police Sgt. J. Paul Vance said.
The rowdiness "was a little more than we had anticipated," Vance said. "But we were prepared for anything."
The names of the people arrested and the charges were not available early Tuesday.
Thousands of boisterous fans celebrated the win across campus, lighting fires and fireworks and overturning trash cans. Not all the celebrating was bad. Fans also danced, cheered and waved pompoms.
A beefed up police force dispersed crowds while firefighters doused flames. Authorities said the partying appeared to be dying down at about 2 a.m.
Police and firefighters will be ready again Tuesday night, when the UConn women's basketball team plays Tennessee in the national championship game in New Orleans. If the Huskies win, UConn would be the first college to sweep both the men's and women's titles in the same year.
About 7,000 people watched UConn's 82-73 victory over Georgia Tech in San Antonio on four large-screen televisions at Gampel Pavilion. Some fans set a couch and a barrier on fire near the arena.
When UConn won its first championship in 1999, fans set bonfires and hurled bottles. University officials said they were not allowing bonfires Monday night.
Cheers for the Huskies also were heard in New Orleans, where the UConn women's team will play for the national championship against Tennessee on Tuesday night. If the Huskies win, UConn will become the first school to win both titles in the same year.

This kind of behavior takes a modicum of " gilt off the gingerbread " for me . I hope the cops kicked arse . I would hope that the UCONN players ask the fans to COOL it . Maybe they'd listen .

The children do it up this way too. Unfortunately we got to campuses full of the idiots. MSU and UofM. So far no rioting reported down to Hillsdale.

Jim Rome had a great take on the "team wins a championship/fans burn down the town" phenom...
I just hope the folks in Stoors have their insurance paid up, cuz tonight the lady huskies are gonna repeat the bedlam.

Blaming it on "the children, rich bratty college students" ignores the greater trend of fans (generally) being flippin ignorant.

This is one of those situations we won't tolerate," UConn police Maj. Ron Blicher said. "This is the worst up here in recent memory." Obviously he wasn't there for the devastation we committed when UConn lost in the NIT Quarterfinals to Boston College in 1973-1974, 76-75.
That was the night a cop drew his revolver while he was chasing a certain unnamed freshman who managed to climb the trellis outside of Crandall-D, disappear into an open 2nd floor window, and escape out through Crandall-C, to continue partying over in Crawford-D....

Well Sonny... you're just damn lucky that the statute of limitations exists!

just drunk spoiled rich Demo-bratsDrunk, yes. Spoiled? Ever been to Storrs? Demo-brats? You've obviously never spent any time in the Ag program there....

Well Sonny... you're just damn lucky that the statute of limitations exists!I remember it like it happened yesterday. Of course, the day after it happened I could barely remember any of it....

UCONN kids are spoiled rich kids??? Have you seen that campus? I don't think so. It's a very average campus. It doesn't graduate a significant number of its male athletes. Just because it's in Connecticut doesn't mean it's anything special. Not to take away from their win last night. But this is not a rich kid school. It also isn't a bright kid school.

It also isn't a bright kid school.Hey! Watch it! I was there from '73-'81 and have the best Bachelor's Degree money can buy....

It doesn't graduate a significant number of its male athletesBack in the day, before UConn basketball was anything to call home about, UConn had one of the best soccer teams in the nation coached by the legendary Joe Morrone. Some of the soccer players were this side of rock ignorant, but man could they play!

FYI... the vast majority of kids at UConn are middle class... NOT "spoiled rich kids". The most affluent area of CT is in the southwestern part of the state: Fairfield County. UConn is located up in the northeast part of the state, out in farm country - Storrs, CT. It was formerly an agricultural college (many years ago).
