FALL RIVER, Mass. — A new facet of the ongoing battle over gay marriage emerged after a lesbian foster parent was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl in her custody twice last month, the Boston Herald reported. Christina Machado, 26, was charged this week with forcefully raping the teen in abuse allegedly witnessed by Machado’s friends and then reported by the teen’s teachers, the Herald reported.

Department of Social Services officials spent two weeks investigating the case and called it “disturbing,” but noted that Machado had a good record in eight years as a foster parent, according to the Herald. Conservatives seized on the case, claming it shows that gay men and lesbians are not fit as parents, the newspaper reported. “It appears that children in homosexual relationships are not as safe,” Ron Crews of the Massachusetts Coalition for Marriage told the Herald. Gay rights activists disagreed. “That is one of the meanest and false stereotypes about gay people that has haunted us wrongly for decades,” Arline Isaacson of the Gay & Lesbian Political Caucus told the Herald. “It is absolutely, factually, completely untrue.” Machado pleaded innocent to the charges, the Herald reported.

Woah! Quite a story. As sympathetic as I am to the non-gay rights activists I don't think they'll find the stats to prove that gay foster parents are more dangerous than non-gay foster parents. That is just my sad take on the situation.
