Lcpl Boudreaux' cardboard sign (from Iraq) was real

Apparently, this sign is real:

According to the Marine Times:

Boudreaux is a reservist with Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines, according to Capt. Jeff Pool, a Marine Forces Reserve spokesman. The New Orleans-based infantry unit deployed to the Kut area of Iraq in May and returned home in mid-September.

Pool said the command began an investigation shortly after it received the photo via e-mail several weeks ago.

Investigating officers have spoken with Boudreaux and are working to determine whether the claims on the sign are true and what, if any, charges to bring against him, Pool said. Investigation results were not expected to be released for another week or two, Marines Forces Reserve spokesman Capt. Patrick Kerr said April 8.

If it is real, it is morbid humor. Relatively light, and genuinely funny as well. I don't think that too many armies have conquered and subjugated a country, and fought an insurgency without the participating soldiers partaking in morbid humor.

I'd invite those clucking with disaproval at Lcpl Boudreaux to spend a little time in a hostile city, baking in 115 degrees, and dodging RPG's to gain some further perspective.

The sign may very well be real, as I don't see anything that really sticks out as it being fake (if you were going to fake it, why not make sure all the text is visible?), but it's hard to believe that if in fact Boudreaux did in fact kill the kids father, then impregnate his sister, that he would pose for a picture with him and be all smiles. I'm sure Boudreaux wasn't thinking too hard about this becoming a national issue, and was probably just thinking that it would be a funny picture to send home to friends. That being said, it's kind of hard to condemn the guy for a practical joke that he never could have imagined would have caused this much furor. In retrospect, it was bad judgement, but who could have ever imagined his little 'joke' would have caused so much controversy?

Look at post 37. They clearly used a smudge tool on whatever was originally on the sign. They didn't even try to copy the cardboard texture. Back when this started going around the net there was even a website where you could put your own message on the sign.

I don't know, maybe it was faked. Even if it's not, I don't see this as a major infraction on Boudreaux's part. If Boudreaux produced the original photo with the 'good' message on it, that should end the story right there.

If Boudreaux had done anything to the family of those children, they would not be smiling and posing, regardless of their knowledge of English.

Yep. At worst it's a joke in bad taste, and it's really starting to look like the 'bad' sign has been doctored.
