Back when Norman Rockwell ruled Saturday evenings, Adobe wasn't even a gleam in some nerd's eye, but a new book shows that the painter was, nevertheless, a photoshop god. Very few Gizmodo readers were even born when Rockwell painted his last Saturday Evening Post cover, but we all know them. You hear that name and suddenly you can picture those overly detailed, cartoonishly dramatic but ultimately kinda corny depictions of American life. Well, Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera, written and compiled by Ron Schick, has given me immense newfound respect for the man, for the meticulous photography, the real people...

Reader Wayne sent us this photograph and explains, "I was walking along and texting. Not really paying that much attention. Then something caught my eye. I thought I was about to step in dog shit, but quickly realized it was a rat stuck in the sidewalk. A big rat. It had tried to squeeze through a crack in the sidewalk and failed." Update: Another reader created the second photograph in the gallery, adding, "hopefully this makes it a little better!" We are still awaiting a reply from Wayne to ask if he tried to help the little guy (or gal)...

A painting from 1617 appears to show a type of telescope thought not to have been built until much later. It's hard to find an invention more emblematic of the birth of modern science than the telescope. And yet surprisingly little is known about its early development. The inventor of the telescope remains unknown to this day. Now a study of the paintings of Jan Brueghel the Elder, a Flemish painter of the Baroque era who was working in Amsterdam at the beginning of the 17th century, is throwing some light on the early development of the telescope. It has...

Civil War Generals, c. 1865 Generally regarded as the world's first commercially successful photojournalist, Matthew Brady was also one of the medium's most accomplished manipulators. In this group portrait of William Tecumseh Sherman and his top officers, he added one figure. For the record, the men are, standing, from left: Oliver Otis Howard, William Babcock Hazen, Jefferson Columbus Davis and Joseph Anthony Mower; seated, from left: John Alexander Logan, Sherman, Henry Warner Slocum and Francis P. Blair. The Original Image: Brady added Blair at the far right. One of Sherman's corps commanders in the critical final offensive in Georgia, Blair...

LOS ANGELES: Software giant Microsoft Corp is apologising for altering a photo on its website to change the race of one of the people shown in t he picture. A photo on the Seattle-based company's US website shows two men, one Asian and one black, and a white woman seated at a conference room table.

Maybe a little too red on the eyes Chris. The photo is from 2009 and comes from Chris Miller of the AP. I could be wrong on this, but I know Photoshop and that adjustment would not be hard. If true would just be another indication of how reckless and out of hand the AP still is.

NEW YORK — The New York Times inadvertently published digitally manipulated photographs in the latest issue of its Sunday magazine, the newspaper said Thursday. In an editors note, the Times acknowledged that Edgar Martins, a 32-year-old freelance photographer based in Bedford, England, digitally altered the photos. The shots have been removed from the newspaper's Web site. Readers pointed out alterations to the photo essay, titled "Ruins of the Second Gilded Age," on the blogs MetaFilter and PDN Pulse. The photos showed run-down housing construction projects across the U.S. that had been hit by the recession. In an introduction to the...

The New York Times has removed photos from its website that appear to have been digitally altered. From Fishbowl NY Editor & Publisher noticed that the New York Times had taken down a slideshow of photos by Portuguese photographer Edgar Martins that had appeared in this Sunday's magazine depicting abandoned house construction projects in the wake of the financial crisis. Now, instead of the gallery online, there is a short statement from the paper: "The pictures in this feature were removed after questions were raised about whether they had been digitally altered." It's unclear who made the original allegations of...

Last week, I came across this nauseating item while perusing one of my favorite blogs, Gateway Pundit. The fact that it was posted by a Democratic party operative speaks volumes about the character (or lack thereof) of today’s Donkeys, for whom Palin Derangement Syndrome is apparently an incurable affliction. The self-proclaimed champions of “choice” sure are angry with Sarah Palin for going with the “life” option, thus the superimposition of the face of pro-life talk radio host Eddie Burke on baby Trig’s body. As a commenter explains: “He (Eddie Burke) once called pro-choice women ‘baby killing maggots’, so his face...

How Cool Is Franken? by Eric Alterman Not only does Al Franken’s hard-fought victory give Democrats a magical 60 seats, it gives the Senate its first genuinely funny ex-comedian. Eric Alterman shares memories of his friend and former neighbor. Senator Franken? As long as it has taken, it’s still pretty hard to believe my friend and former neighbor is due to be sworn in early next week. He’ll be “Senator Franken” to the press and the lobbyists, and “my distinguished colleague” to the rest of that esteemed body. But as for the rest of us, I think we can safely...

Photo Stirs Speculation on North Korean Leader By CHOE SANG-HUN SEOUL, South Korea — An image of the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, shown recently on government-run television appears to be a doctored version of an earlier photo, raising the possibility that Mr. Kim’s health has deteriorated to the point where he has had to skip public appearances, a South Korean newspaper reported on Monday. On June 14, the state-run Central TV showed what it said was a still photo of Mr. Kim posing with a group of soldiers indoors during a visit to a military unit. The Chosun Ilbo,...

The smiling, ethnically diverse family featured on the cover of Toronto's latest edition of its summer Fun Guide was digitally altered to make the photo more "inclusive," which city officials say is in keeping with a policy to reflect diversity. A spokesman for the department that publishes the guide listing recreation activities confirmed the publication was doctored to insert the face of a different father. "He superimposed the African-Canadian person onto the family cluster in the original photo. It was two photographs and one head was superimposed over the original family photo," said John Gosgnach, communications director for the...

Brian MacFarlane was amazed when he looked at the photo he had captured of the bird in flight. The incredible display of mid-flight acrobatics is also a remarkable feat of wildlife photography. MacFarlane was simply photographing geese buffeted by strong winds at Strumpshaw in Norfolk and did not expect to capture a moment of contortionism. "The wind was making life difficult for the flying birds," said Mr MacFarlane. "On closer inspection of the image I realised it had flipped upside down but kept its head the right way up. "Quite a feat!" Paul Stancliffe, of the British Trust for Ornithology,...

Jay McKinnon, a self-described Department of Homeland Security-trained document specialist, has implicated himself in the production of fraudulent Hawaii birth certificate images similar to the one endorsed as genuine by the Barack Obama campaign, and appearing on the same blog entry where the supposedly authentic document appears. The evidence of forgery and manipulation of images of official documents, triggered by Israel Insider's revelation of the collection of Hawaii birth certificate images on the Photobucket site and the detective work of independent investigative journalists and imaging professionals in the three weeks since the publication of the images, implicate the Daily Kos,...

We asked readers to dream up doctored landscapes for the President's Air Force One – and wow, did they ever deliver! On Monday, the Presidential jet and an F-16 fighter plane buzzed over lower Manhattan for a photo-op of the First Plane with New York City landmarks. The stunt sparked fears of terror attacks and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. We suggested the White House staffers could've gotten better results – for a lot less money – from the comforts of their own D.C. offices using a program like Photoshop. And YOU proved us right. Read more: "We asked...

Memo to the White House: Not only was flying a Presidential jet for a photo-op Monday over downtown Manhattan in bad taste – it was unnecessary. Anyone in the White House ever hear of Photoshop? You'd think the administration would've been tech-savvy enough to realize the merits of the computer software program – what with its constant Internet spin doctoring and the President's notorious BlackBerry infatuation. The cost of flying one of Obama's official planes – a pimped-out Boeing 747 – along with a F-16 jet over the city cost upwards of $300,000 in taxpayer dollars. In comparison, the latest...

A few days ago Noel Sheppard brought to us the story of yet another example of how the star struck media is fawning over President Obama. But, when the story first broke of the photo of that lean, swimsuit wearing Obama gracing the cover of the next issue of Washingtonian Magazine, it wasn't immediately realized that the photo itself was a photoshoppped image of the president and not in its original form. But not soon after the image of the cover was released folks began to realize what had happened. It turns out that Washingtonian Magazine made several photoshop alterations...

Well, did you think it was authentic? Nope, and just like Obama's Certificate of Live Birth Forgery, it left a nasty Photoshop finger print. For those you not that computer-savvy, Photoshop is image-editing software (the most popular). You can virtually superimpose one image onto another etc. Photoshop is often used to put heads on other peoples' bodies (as in the case of some Glam magazines) etc. Even an amateur with this software can make convincing, yet fake photos. Check out the image below that Obots are trying to pass around as proof that Obama attended Punahou Private school in Hawaii.

(Picture in link) Iranian state-run news agency Press TV ran a story on its website this week praising the unveiling of an Iranian-made drone, that according to the Israeli daily Maariv bears a striking resemblance to an earlier photo taken in Israel of an Israeli-made drone. In an article run this week on the Maariv website, the photo used by Press TV of the Iranian drone is shown above a remarkably similar photo from Israel Aerospace Industries of the Heron 1 Israeli drone. The two photos appear to be exactly the same, with the angle of the shot and the...

Haaretz has discovered why the Iranians spend a miniscule amount of money on national defense, as Barack Obama once claimed during the presidential campaign. Instead of building actual systems, they just copy photos of other nations’ weapons and claim them as their own. Tehran’s official news agency announced the release of a new drone, but it bears a very, very, very close resemblance to someone else’s — and you’ll never guess who:

The nine silver spheres hover above a row of shops, including a Coral bookies, on the internet giant’s new Street View service. Sun reader Faye Sharpe, 18, discovered them while viewing her neighbourhood of Wolverley Street in Bethnal Green, East London. Faye said: “I was checking out the road to see if I could spot my mates. I thought it looked very strange and zoomed in. “I thought it was some planes but they look pretty close together for that. Maybe they are UFOs.” Yesterday baffled ufologist Nick Pope said he was “very excited” by the image, which he labelled...

ANOTHER strange sight has been spotted above the skies of Taunton. This image was sent in by reader Phil White whose son Bret spotted it from their back garden in Crowcombe Road at around 10.30pm on Sunday. He said: “A golden bright light came from space out of the night sky, did some pretty weird movements then sped off towards the motorway. “Bret had the great sense to grab the camera and get a shot of it. “As you can see it was moving very fast. It was a very strange thing – a one point it stopped dead in...

I need to find someone willing to fix my daughter's senior picture with Photoshop. I don't have the program and wouldn't know how to use it if I did. I need the necklace removed from the photo if it's possible. I'd be willing to pay $20. She didn't know it was senior photo day until the morning of. (She was absent the few days before with the flu.) So she has no makeup (good thing she's cute!). If you're talented and you can get rid of the necklace and perhaps touch it up *just a bit*, please let me know!

I'm on a messageboard on topix that's currently inhabited by libs. I want to get a picture macro of Sean Hannity flying ala the Hindenberg, with the caption saying "Oh the Sean Hannity" to show whenever Barack Obama goes on an anti-Hannity tirade. I would do it myself, but all my picture editing tools are on my other computer and I think it could become a good meme on FR too.

'Fake photo' revives Kim rumours There is fresh speculation about the health of North Korea's "Dear Leader" Kim Jong-il, amid suggestions that an image of Mr Kim may have been doctored. The image, released on Wednesday, appeared to show Mr Kim in good health while inspecting two military units. But an analysis by the UK's Times newspaper highlighted incongruities around the leader's legs, and the BBC found what look like mismatched pixels. It has given new life to suggestions Mr Kim may be seriously unwell. "They go into ostrich mode so readily - because they have given no clue about...
