VANITY: Grassroots activism - suggested names for a Doberman puppy in an election year?
Posted on 04/12/2004 7:53:00 AM PDT by elk
This is a Presidential election year, we are getting a red Doberman puppy shortly, and we need help picking the right name for him. We live in a pretty liberal area, and would like to choose a puppy name that might create the opportunity to engage in some grassroots activism - perhaps politely challenge folks, or point them to website such as Freerepublic, as we walk the dog or take him to the doggie runs. Since it is impossible for me to volunteer for a campaign, or to run for a local board, I always seek to find ways to make a difference, and I thought this might be one chance.
We've thought of "Reagan" or "Heston"; I personally like "Glock" but I thought there may be too much liability involved in naming a dog stereotyped for aggression such a name (what a shame, since a properly trained doberman is no such thing - they are great indoor, family dogs, in fact). Since Freepers are so creative, I thought I'd risk posting a vanity to take advantage of that creativity! Thanks so very much!!!!

Our dog's name is Gunnar
If you live in a liberal area, you better name him Recount.

Don't give the dog a topical name.
Politics come and go, any controversy this year will be forgotten, and you can expect to have that little Dobe for 15 years if you're lucky.
I'm partial to classical names for dogs. Since my dog is a hunting dog (Labrador), I would have named her after one of the Furies (Alecto, Tisiphone, or Megaera), or one of the Harpies (Caeleno, Ocypeté, Aello). Since you have a boy dog, you have all the classical heroes to choose from.
Unfortunately, the breeder pre-registered my dog before I bought her - so I'm stuck with a silly name: Sumo's Co-Doz Brown Bombshell. We call her Shelley the Wonder Dog.

How about Buckley, after WFB? Less grand, but more infuriating to Libs: Bork.

I second "W". That's what you should put on the AKC papers as well: "W".
We'll need to see some pix to make sure though. :)

Ooooh! Red Dobies--they're purdy! I remember Wild as the Wind, the red dobie who won the Westminster back in 88 or 89-- what a beauty.
Good idea to avoid "Glock" -- names like that unfortunately add to the bad reps these poor dogs have. Names I've thought about for a future dog have been: Liberty, Mars (I like mythological names, my own dog is named Ursa), Odin, Sidehow Bob, and Nesmith (after Mike).
Political themed names? Dutch, Gipper, Rumsfeld.
Please don't hesitate to post pics of the new pup when he arrives!!!

Rush, after you know who. My red Dobe is named Sundance, and shes a goofy marshmellow, who would not hesitate to rip your head off if she thought her pet humans were threatened.
