An Iraqi girl answers the door when U.S. Marines arrive to deliver food in a virtually abandoned area of Fallujah, Iraq (news - web sites), Thursday, April 15, 2004. Marines and Iraqi insurgents have frequently clashed in the neighborhood in the last week and a number of families remain holed-up in their houses.(AP Photo/John Moore)

KEYWORDS: food; iraq; marines
This is not meant to be a HA-HA caption, I think this is a VERY underreported story and need to be told to all.

It is a great story. On the other hand,
Tom Daschle is deeply saddened.

What you aren't hearing from the mainstream press (imho, THEY are committing war crimes and getting our troops killed with their dangerous, misleading misreporting):
"Yesterday in Al Kharma, near Fallujah, a significant number of anti-Iraqi forces assaulted defensive Marine positions close to a residential neighborhood. Marines repelled the assault, with lethal, accurate fire. When the fighting ended, residents came outside and told the Marines that the fighters had moved into their homes recently, virtually holding them hostage. The residents were able to then move about freely in their own neighborhood and beyond." ~ CJTF-7, April 15, 2004
Thank you, OXEN. YES, the story should be told.

Looks like it to me. Why would she have a camo scarf? New hot fashion item in Fallujah?

I'm sure at Al-Jazeera and DU they will report that the girl was gang-raped and killed, rather than given food.
Or that this was the Girl that Lcpl Budreux "knocked up" and got CAIR all bunched up in the panties.

To: madison10
while appreciating the photo, I can't tell exactly what's on her mind. And looks as if someone else is next to her reaching out to our soldiers.
To: OXENinFLA
The people who say, "I'm against the war, but I support the troops," are proven to be liars because they DO NOT talk about all the great things our troops are doing to rebuild Iraq and help the people.
This message needs to be pounded home every time you hear someone say that. Ask them, "Why don't I hear you telling about all the great things the troops, who you CLAIM to support, are doing for the people of Iraq?" (If you feel bold, you might say, "You don't want to mention this good news, because you don't want President Bush to get any credit for it. You like to claim that President Bush lied to get us into the war, but then you tell your own bald-faced lie when you say that you support the troops. If you supported the troops, you would be quick to tell about all the good things the they're doing in Iraq.")
To: LadyPilgrim
She looks apprehensive. Our guys probably look overbearing even when handing out food.

All she needs to do is look into the eyes of an American and she will see a difference, the difference, between freedom and oppression and fear. She will see something so different and know that what we have in America and what we are bringing them is SO good! The eyes say so much, she is searching in them for something she can place her hope in!

Don't want to kill 'em all. Want them, for generations to come, to soil themselves when they hear jet noise or see something that looks like an Western military uniform. Want Americans and Brits and Poles and Italians, etc., to replace the Djinn, and Ifrits in their folklore for objects of fear and terror.
I am probably wrong, but that seems like it has more potential than being nice to 'em.
We owe our people, fellow Americans, even Liberals, that sort of concern - due process, etc. We do not owe the Iraqis these things. This is a stupid way to fight a war and deal with the people who aid and abet and shield them.

I stand by remarks and my membership in the organizations mentioned (if not always my grammar and spelling...)
Glad I'm not in charge, too. I wouldn't want the lives of valiant young men on my conscience, just 'cause I was worried 'bout "world opinion" instead of getting the fight over and done with (and making certain it didn't bite us on the @$$ in 5, 10 or 40 years).
The Army and USMC are there to kill people and break things - and there are a lot folks over there needin' killing. Our leaders are ordering our troops to risk their lives to feed and water the very folks who, if not actually opposing them, are probably shielding and aiding our enemies. It is a nice gesture, but a really, really stupid policy. If I am not mistaken, its how we are arrived at this state in the first place.
The only thing more foolish we could do is to negotiate with them instead of killing them.
But we're doing that, too.

To: Little Ray
No Little Ray, you are wrong. The US military is there to enforce the political will of the government of the United States of America.
"The Army and USMC are there to kill people and break things - and there are a lot folks over there needin' killing." Little Ray
To: Little Ray
and there are a lot folks over there needin' killing.
And there are a lot that do not, like babies and 6 year olds, and women who are essentially slaves. Civilized nations do not harm innocent children when they do not need to do so. Christian nations do not harm innocent children when there is no need to do so. If they do then they deserve a millstone. Its macho to say kill 'em all but not adult.
Our leaders are ordering our troops to risk their lives to feed and water the very folks who, if not actually opposing them, are probably shielding and aiding our enemies.
Probably? We don't starve people because of a "probably" even if it were really "probably". These armed militias, foreign terrorists, and former regime members hide themselves behind civilians and abuse them. Tit for tat on civilian abuse is not something US soldiers seem to have a craving for generally.

Beg to differ. When bombs fall, we may not be aiming at women and children, but they get hit. War on the ground is no different. If the enemy fires at you from the orphanage, the orphans are not your problem; eliminating the enemy and keeping your troops alive is.
When we fight insurgents and terrorists, if the locals don't help us and especially if they help the enemy, they have no business complaining when they get caught in the crossfire or can't get food, water, and medicine. Its not abuse: We don't owe them these things (we don't owe people at HOME these things). Further, providing them with food, etc., doesn't seem to change their loyalties, and it risks the troops' lives unnecessarily.
As I said, being NICE is how we got here in the first place.

Ooops. You're exactly right. I stand very corrected.
Though using 'em as meals on treads, civil engineers, and construction crews strikes me as strange way to use the military.
Still it worked for Roman Legions.

Extraordinarily simplistic view of the world. I'm grateful that our troops, when asked, consistently say that they are there to help innocent Iraqis have a chance at a real life. Very glad that your view is a minority.

Yes it is simplistic. Clausewitz once wrote something to the effect that, in war, everything is very simple. Its just that, during wartime, even simple things things become very difficult.
Perhaps, the best way to help innocent Iraqis is get rid of the guilty ones, along with the Syrians, Iranians, Egyptians, Saudis, Chechnyans, Palis, etc., they hang with? As quickly as possible?
Please keep in mind that Fallujah is in the Sunni triangle and is one of the cities the benefited most from Saddam's rule. Innocent Iraqis might be very few and far between there.
However, that part about being there to "help innocent Iraqis" sounds pretty suspicious to me. As a former soldier, I would be GLAD to help the innocent Iraqis, but that is not what I would be there for. I was not in Germany in the 1980's to help the Germans, (though I did when I could, and enjoyed their hospitality very much).
