Gasoline Prices Rise to $1.83/gallon

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. average retail gasoline prices rose over the last two weeks and could go higher, according to an industry analyst. The national average for self-serve regular unleaded gas was nearly $1.83 a gallon in the two weeks surveyed through to April 23, up about 3 cents per gallon, according to the nationwide Lundberg survey of about 8,000 gas stations.

The price has risen 35 cents per gallon since Dec. 19 and is about 22 cents higher than one year ago, according to the survey released on Sunday.

"Prices keep breaking all records and even at these prices, demand keeps growing dramatically due to U.S. economic growth," said survey editor Trilby Lundberg.

At $2.17 per gallon, San Diego saw the highest average price for self-serve regular unleaded gas. Tulsa, Oklahoma saw the lowest price -- $1.66 per gallon.

"Demand is an important reason for the rise in gasoline prices," Lundberg said. "The other reason is tight gasoline supply and less significant are crude oil prices which remain high."

But even with the most recent price increase, after being adjusted for inflation, today's price is $1 lower than it was in March 1981 and gasoline is not a significant component of a consumer's budget, Lundberg said.

Every f-ing place I move to ends up exceeding the "highest average" price they list. On Jamboree through Irvine/Tustin I saw $2.19 for the cheap stuff just about an hour ago.

I paid $1.64/gal here a couple of days ago. It was around that all over NW Houston, too. Plus or minus a nickel/gallon.

The cheapest I've seen in No Cal is $2.07.

Crude oil has come down significantly in the past week.

Let's see if that matters to gas station owners.

I just got to my office after a trip into NJ; the gas there is running $1.63⁹ to $1.68⁹ as against $1.74⁹ to $1.79⁹ here in PA for Unleaded Regular. May have to keep going back, plus they pump it for you!

$1.83? sheesh... i haven't seen gas prices that low for months... we were ecstatic to find gas for $1.99 per gallon yesterday... it was under the $2.00 mark!! (central valley, california... tracy, stockton, modesto, and also the south bay--san jose area which tends to be a little higher than the central valley)...

What cost $ .35 in 1965 would cost $1.95 in 2002.

I can’t remember if a gallon of gas cost $ .35 or more in 1965. At any rate, I’d say gas prices are STILL quite a bargain compared to housing costs and new car costs.

In Biloxi, MS, the prices seem to have dropped 2-3 cents over the last few days. Many places showing $1.66 or so.

In the late 60's early 70's we didn't have 43 cents per gallon TAX!

Today's prices are still a bargain!

You probably won't see a notable drop at the pump for 3 weeks or so (assuming NY Harbor wholesale stays at Friday's level, a proposition that is doubtful of itself), and even that will depend on where in the US you are. If you're in a very small reformulant area (think S. Wisconsin), probably nothing happens. If, OTOH, you're in rural Ohio or Kentucky, pump price will follow wholesale more faithfully.

Doesn't matter how far the prices for crude go down if there aren't enough refineries to process it.

16 refineries in CA and the last I heard, four of the six refineries that were down are still D O W N !

And I haven't heard of any new refineries being built either!
