Call these 5th column SOBs. How dare they denegrate our men in Iraq. These boys probably should be trained to be jailers and interrogators instead of punished for pushing around the enemy. This is not your Grandfather's war!

I only saw parts of it but basically it looked like naked Iraqi men with bags on their heads piled on top of each other in crude human pyramids, or standing naked, bunched together, with 1 or 2 U.S. MPs (one appeared to be a woman) standing , pointing, giving thumbs up with stupid grins on their faces. They were not flattering pictures, and I hope they disappear into the ether and get pushed aside by bigger news in Fallujah. If they are shown on Al Jazeera, it makes us look bad. They don't show physical abuse, but humiliation.

One other pic was of someone (I assume an Iraqi man) with a bag on his head and covered in what looked like a big shawl, standing on a small box with his arms out slightly from his sides with what looked like wires attached to his hands. The story is that he was told he would be electrocuted if he fell off the box. Again, no actual electrocution or physical abuse... just not pretty pictures.

Let me start by saying as a vet I have very mixed feelings about this war and the "mode" we're assuming in the world at large.

This said, is this the best they can do? Is it some kind of profound scandal that we made them do a "pyramid" and tricked them into thinking they'd get an electric shock?

I'd say that's pretty civil... so what if they're humiliated. Have the rules of war changed to where we can rip a human body to shreds but we can't hurt anyone's feelings?

I honestly don't get it.

I agree... they were nasty. And they made me angry. Doesn't it just make you want to slap those soldiers around? What an idiotic thing to do. What they did could conceivably lead to more violence against their fellow soldiers. Why on earth would they do something so stupid... and then take pictures?!? If you're gonna do something like that, at least leave no evidence! Sheesh.

The pictures made me furious, but that guy's lawyer made my head explode.

Evidently they are going to claim that because they are reservists nobody told them not to do that, can you believe that?

Let them forever be exposed to the world as horrible AND stupid people, plus they need the book thrown at them!

I heard one of the higher ups state that they will be court martialed. This is not acceptable which is easy for me to say here at the computer but the fact is that all of these soldiers were specifically told (and 99.9% have honored) not to create pr disasters such as this may become. It will be short-lived but doesn't help.

It's not really that "nasty". It's much nastier when someone is blown apart into chunks of meat and their family is ruined forever.

I'm not trying to start a debate, just offering perspective. Who cares if they were humiliated?

I should clarify that what is not acceptable is that these soldiers conduct themselves in such a manner as to create pr for al jazeera. I don't like saying it because I can imagine the strain of the situation but at the same time we have no choice but to discipline yhese particular troops.

I agree! We should treat people who want to murder soldiers and our familys in our homeland with the respect they deserve. Personally, they should had been used as prison punks in the show OZ!

I think we're not as upset by what was done to the prisoners (let's face it, it's not as if they tore out fingernails one by one) as by the fact that the pictures (why on earth would you take pictures?!?) are very unflattering to our soldiers, and creates a PR bonanza for Al Jazeera, etc. That's unforgiveable. It's a betrayal of their fellow soldiers, and the sacrifices their fellow soldiers have made. That's my opinion.

War is ugly amd terrible, but sometimes inevitable, and must be fought with dillegence to victory.

We send innocent kids to do ugly and terrible things to other people who are trying to cause them harm.

I am a vet. What our troops do to win this war is their business. Things are happening over there so that we can remain free. All they ask of us is our respect.

They have mine.

Sorry, but as a former Army Officer, I think that these soldiers should be court martialed (as is being done) and given stiff sentences. The only thing that separates an army from a mob is discipline and these soldiers obviously don't have any. Not only that, they were stupid to take pictures and share them with someone. AND on top of that to claim they didn't know that treating POWs that way is against the Geneva Conventions means they are liars as well. I have never read the actual Geneva Conventions either (as their lawyer claimed), but the lectures they give you in the Army should have at least told them that what they were doing was illegal. On top of that, if other countries see us treating enemy prisoners that way, how much worse will they treat the next US soldier taken prisoner?

So you have a few undisciplined, stupid, lying people placing better soldiers at greater risk. The only thing worse is that CBS showed it to the world in prime time while we are at war. I remember when 60 Minutes would show stories of bad things that were not being taken care of. This is a bad thing where the military is doing exactly the right actions.

Ideally you're both correct, people shouldn't lose themselves and give into weakness and evil. Even if they're put into this horrid situation.

This is what happens to some young feeble minds however. What you haven't seen caught on film is far worse.

I can't disagree with you.

Should the tankers I saw run over a dead Iraqi so many times that he was a pile of mush be punished?

War is just a bunch of people trying to kill and mame each other. How is indignity worse than dead and dismembered?

It think much of it depends on who gets caught doing what. Like that Marine with the sign joking about doing the kids sister. Everyone was horrified about that, yet could care less about the kid down the block with the dead sister. It's like we're lost in TV land or something.

Maybe I just look at things differently.

Yes, reminds me of the four contractors who were killed, dismembered and hanged from the bridge in Fallujah. How everybody here at FreeRepublic was incensed that they were dismembered and hanged yet in stark reality the real crime was the killing of the four as it was for the the other hundreds of good guys who have been killed. Yet there was a new rage because they were dismembered and hanged after they were killed.

And then the Fallujan clerics picked up on this outrage and they saw how it was more intense than for any of the hundreds of killings of our guys and these clerics apologized only for the dismemberment and the public hanging. They never apologized for simply -- killing the four guys.

Freepers were then surprised that there was no apology for the killings.

How quickly you've forgotten what these murderous bastards are like.

I agree it's a minor story, In fact, not even much of a story because it's being handled properly by the military. It's not as if there's a cover-up to probe.

The problem is that the media is lazy, and whenever there are pictures of something, they jump on it because pictures make their jobs very easy. It's the same reason FOX shows those stupid high-speed (and sometimes excruciatingly low-speed) car chases in LA. It's a non-story. Some jerk who probably stole a six-pack from a 7-11 running from the cops in some LA suburb. But because there's a picture of it... they show it as if it's an important breaking news story.

That's why the most unforgiveable part of this for me is that these idiots took pictures.

I don't live in a world where everybody is perfect, therefore it surprises me not in the least that there are some dunderheads in American uniform. These soldiers should be made an example of so that all American troops will have no doubt in their mind about how much pain will come down on their heads if they behave likewise.

It's a crying shame that American soldiers were not only dumb enough to mistreat prisoners in their charge, but that by memorializing their stupidity on film they gave aid and comfort to the enemy.

I agree about the 4 Americans & that brave Italian. I suppose it would be a waste of time to ask Dan Blather when he & 60 Minutes will be running those segments (with pics). Oh, but wait, that would be too graphic!
What is even more disgusting are the true motives of CBS and 60 Minutes. It must feel really good to know that you are inciting the enemy against your own countrymen. There is a day of reckoning coming for people like that.

Thanks for that comment, because I heartily agree, and it redeems the whole thread.

I wish that your comment could be translated into Arabic, and broadcast all over the place, because it reflect the opinions of decent people. People in Iraq probably need to hear it.

One thing which some posters are saying - that why are people upset about this - it is not as if the prisoner is being run over by a tank etc. - are rather missing the point. The prisoner might prefer to be run over by a tank. In Middle Eastern culture, sexual shame is one of the worst emotions, and for a man to be sexually handled by another male is disgusting.

Every one of those men will be a good recruit for the suicide bomber squads, if he gets out of prison. And everyone of them, whether he gets out or not, will have an uncle, a cousin, a younger brother and even a wife eager to avenge him.

Not saying that our "guys" were right by any streach - BUT...

At least our soldiers didn't drag the naked bodies through the streets mutilating these Iraqis, setting them on fire, and hanging them in a public square for all to see....

Now, that being said, these soldiers involved are claiming they had no trainging and poor supplies. How much common sense does it take to realize that they wouldn't want to be treated in the same manner? Had it been our folks that had been treated that way- our soldiers would be screaming bloody murder about the Geneva Convention and how terrible the treatment was.

Bump comment:

Let's return the "respect" Nightline is giving to the dead troops.

How about getting some anti-homosexual Christian TV evangelist to read the names of gays who die of AIDS. We can even show their pictures, and maybe interview a few crying relatives.

Would the media see this as creepy? Tacky? Sick? Would they see it the way we see Nightline?

"If they are shown on Al Jazeera, it makes us look bad."

Your second clause answers the first - OF COURSE they will be seen on Al-Jezeera, which is why it enrages me that these photos were released. If military regulations were broken, punish the soldiers, but don't release these imflammatory pics for the Arab world. CBS's releasing of these pics will get American soldiers killed.
