Their stupid, s***-eatin' grins in the pictures just made me want to throw a punch at the screen. Thanks for that comment, because I heartily agree, and it redeems the whole thread.
I wish that your comment could be translated into Arabic, and broadcast all over the place, because it reflect the opinions of decent people. People in Iraq probably need to hear it.
One thing which some posters are saying - that why are people upset about this - it is not as if the prisoner is being run over by a tank etc. - are rather missing the point. The prisoner might prefer to be run over by a tank. In Middle Eastern culture, sexual shame is one of the worst emotions, and for a man to be sexually handled by another male is disgusting.
Every one of those men will be a good recruit for the suicide bomber squads, if he gets out of prison. And everyone of them, whether he gets out or not, will have an uncle, a cousin, a younger brother and even a wife eager to avenge him.

They wanted the pictures out there so the Muslim world would be outraged.

Not saying that our "guys" were right by any streach - BUT...
At least our soldiers didn't drag the naked bodies through the streets mutilating these Iraqis, setting them on fire, and hanging them in a public square for all to see....
Now, that being said, these soldiers involved are claiming they had no trainging and poor supplies. How much common sense does it take to realize that they wouldn't want to be treated in the same manner? Had it been our folks that had been treated that way- our soldiers would be screaming bloody murder about the Geneva Convention and how terrible the treatment was.

Bump comment:
Let's return the "respect" Nightline is giving to the dead troops.
How about getting some anti-homosexual Christian TV evangelist to read the names of gays who die of AIDS. We can even show their pictures, and maybe interview a few crying relatives.
Would the media see this as creepy? Tacky? Sick? Would they see it the way we see Nightline?

They were taken by another soldier who reported the wrong doing.
If they were abusing Iraqis (even if they are scum), they should have been reported and were!
To: saquin
"If they are shown on Al Jazeera, it makes us look bad."
Your second clause answers the first - OF COURSE they will be seen on Al-Jezeera, which is why it enrages me that these photos were released. If military regulations were broken, punish the soldiers, but don't release these imflammatory pics for the Arab world. CBS's releasing of these pics will get American soldiers killed.

**for a man to be sexually handled by another male is disgusting.**
So, is it a myth that acts of homosexuality are prevalent among certain Arab tribes?

I agree... they were nasty. And they made me angry. Doesn't it just make you want to slap those soldiers around? What an idiotic thing to do. What they did could conceivably lead to more violence against their fellow soldiers. Why on earth would they do something so stupid... and then take pictures?!? If you're gonna do something like that, at least leave no evidence! Sheesh.
I agree. If you're going to screw up, don't take evidence to incriminate yourself. As AA said, this isn't grade A torture, it IS despicable, but by handing out evidence, the soldiers have made it worse than ever

I beg to disagree. The humiliation in a prison IS nasty. Level of nastiness is picking at straws

On top of that, if other countries see us treating enemy prisoners that way, how much worse will they treat the next US soldier taken prisoner?
Ping on that.

Should the tankers I saw run over a dead Iraqi so many times that he was a pile of mush be punished?
What happens on a battlefield is war, it's acceptable. What happens in a prison is NOT.

We should not have to talk about islamic terrorists and American soldiers in the same sentence.
true. American soldiers, except for this sorry bunch, are noble and honorable men and women
