Costco checks hot dog after woman claims she bit into bullet at Irvine store (9mm)

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Costco workers checked the merchandise at its food court and found nothing out of the ordinary after a woman claimed she bit into a bullet while eating a hot dog, the company's chief executive officer said Wednesday. Police interviewed workers and opened all of the approximately 25 remaining hot dog packages after Olivia Chanes, 31, reported the incident, CEO Jim Sinegal said.

"We checked everything thoroughly," Sinegal said by phone from Costco's corporate office near Seattle. "Obviously, it's regrettable. ... The question is when could something like this happen."

..later went to the hospital complaining of stomach pains and X-rays found what appeared to be another 9mm bullet in her stomach, The Orange County Register reported. Doctors told her the metal round would eventually pass out of her system, the newspaper said.

Yep, a bullet would never make it through the process. Hot dogs are essentially liquid before they're molded into weenies, and there are filters. No freakin' way this happened for real.

Coulda been a hit... put a few bullets into someone then dump him into the meat byproduct grinder... by the time it gets to the customer it'll be the same bland, colorized pseudomeat as the intended ingredients.

When I saw the headline, I translated from the journalese "bullet" ="cartridge", and assumed unfired round. I never thought "actual bullet from inside target". My bad.

Ewwww. Disgusting. But that reminds me of home. You see, we had many hunters in our family and lots of hunting friends. My Uncle was a busy sausage maker. Between the unmarked meat in the freezer wrapped only in butcher paper, and the sausages, you never know what kind of meat you were eating. Once it ended up in a stew, you just said, "More please".

But bullets in the meat - nope.

Reminds me of Upton Sinclair's famous muck raking novel, The Jungle, an expose of workers' plight and working condition in Chicago meat processing plant. One incident depicted (supposedly based on an actual occurence) had a worker accidently slipping into a huge, boiling vat of sausage meat. After workers fished out the clothing and nearly flesh-bared bones, the batch was allowed to move forward to be extruded into gut casings and to market.
