...authorities eventually decided to detain Mayfield after Spanish authorities leaked news of his connection to the Madrid bombing to reporters in Europe. So "Spanish authorities" tried to drop Mayfield the hint to disappear, but he din't do it quickly enough.

Remember we have had a change of who is in charge in Spain.
The fact that Newsweak had this data made me wonder about who was leaking what.
If you want to catch bad guys, one of the last people who would be leaked would be Newsweak and Ishecoughy. Newsweak probably leaked this and forced an early detention of this Jihad Johnnie.

And of course that leak had nothing to do with Socialists (Appeasers of Islam, Inc.)
being in power in Spain.

So "Spanish authorities" tried to drop Mayfield the hint to disappear, but he din't do it quickly enough. Now wait a minute and think about this. The Spanish law enforcement folks didn't change overnight when the president was re-elected. These are most likely the same people that initiated the investigation. They wanted Mayfield from the start and told the FBI as much. They probably understand something about American legal procedure, and feared this guy would disappear while the FBI took the time to build a case. They also knew, that if the investigation went public, Mayfield would clearly be a flight risk and therefore the FBI would be justified in detaining him as a material witness. So they leak to the press, and bingo, their suspect is behind bars - how convenient! Note that he was "detained" Thursday and the story broke AFTWERWARDS on Friday. He was already under constant surveillance - he had no opportunity to escape in response to the leak. I wouldn't be surprised if the FBI got a phone call from their Spanish friends giving them a heads-up about the coming "leak."
