White Liberal Guilt

Last week's episode of the Sopranos featured a conversation between the daughter, Meadow Soprano, and her unemployed live-in boyfriend. While discussing his out-of-work status, the character says that he won't go to work at McDonald's because he doesn't want to take a job from a minority.
I was struck by just how condescending and patronizing this is. I grew up in a relatively non-political black household. My parents are more religious than political. However, like most blue-collar black men, my father leans Democrat if anyone ever asks. I grew up believing in affirmative action and I actually liked Bill Clinton before I detested him.
However, my parents raised their children to be intelligent, independent thinkers. One of the things that turned me away from liberalism is the "white guilt". It seems to me that this pervasive attitude presumes blacks can do nothing without the assistance and sacrifices of whites. There is no need for blacks to work hard and compete for success, because whites must hand to them whatever they require.
Can a people really be free if they do not fight for it? Is it possible that being granted freedom by the government is why so many blacks do not get off of the government plantation? As a human being with pride, I detest "white guilt" and the patronizing attitude of so many liberals.

I saw it too and read it as a great satire against obtuse liberalism.

All of the interactions involving Meadow, her boyfriend, and their various friends seemed to be written for us to laugh at, not agree with.
What's not funny, is the fact that so many liberals never grow out of this guilt phase, and so many blacks never confront it.

It seems to me that this pervasive attitude presumes blacks can do nothing without the assistance and sacrifices of whites. You nailed it! Great post! This is basically the line that Robert KKK Byrd adopted after he took of his white hood and robes and joined the "real" anti-Black hate group. Welfare has done nothing more than give minorities just enough money to keep them alive to make it to the voting booth.

Is it possible that being granted freedom by the government is why so many blacks do not get off of the government plantation? Our freedom comes from God. Governments cannot grant freedom; it can only take freedoms away.
All of us need to understand this.

Can a people really be free unles they fight for it?In a word, no. Others may spend both blood, and treasure in an attempt to free someone, but that person, or persons will never truly be free until they pony up at least some of the price, themselves...

I believe the writers of this show and David Chase are flaming liberals.

I believe the writers of this show and David Chase are flaming liberals. If they wrote that dialogue straight then it's even funnier.

Great post.........it sounds like your parents did a good job. Love the attitude!!!
Non-"white guilt" ridden white guy here...LOL
To: Semper Paratus
Perhaps, but also remember that Meadow's boyfriend was saying "there's no way I can get a job in this economy."
One would think we're in another Great Depression.

"there's no way I can get a job in this economy."Good point. Makes it's even more amusing. (:>)

Good Evening All-
This is the affliction from which Michael Moore suffers.
The next time you visit Barnes & Noble or Borders Bookstore browse (but don't purchase) some of the stuff he has written. Talk about a self-loathing, confused, guilty white guy! He has all of the "problems" solved for his little, helpless black folks....sheesh.

The Meadow character has become the 'young supposedly well-meaning pseudo-intellectual liberal zealot' ever since she went off to college. From my view, this silly stereotype is a little too dead-on to be unintentional - she's even been throwing the irrationally emotional hissy-fits one would expect to accompany (or be the reason for) this mindset. I figure that, as her character evolves, she'll be written as either a completely rabid nutter or, if she gets a cold, hard slap in the face from reality, she'll wash herself of it all and grow up (or, for maximum tv-drama impact, both).

Is it possible that being granted freedom by the government is why so many blacks do not get off of the government plantation? With the exception of the source of freedom issue, yes. 'The Black Leadership' and their supporters have chosen to enslave themselves to socialism (democrats) for their meager subsistance (welfare etc). Thankfully many have not followed the 'leadership' down that doomed path, but we need another underground railroad to help those that have escape. The first requirement of freedom is the ability to think for yourself.

But the MOST ridiculous thing about the Sorpranos episode was that the boyfriend, a wimpering simp of a typical lefty college student if ever there was one (and he's not even cute, why is she with him, what happened to her old boyfriend, I liked him better) takes a job on Tony's mobbed up job site! For like $30 per hour wasn't it?
I'm sorry, the Sopranos is really not so good this year, I think it's time they got some "closure".
