I had some Trinitite somewhere in my collection of rocks and such, somewhere.
Won't be able to ID it in my whole jumble of glassy stuff without a geiger counter though.

"....was one of the 2,188 people who visited Trinity on April 3, 2004......"

Cool! I've always wondered about whether you could visit the site.

Have you read the 2 Richard Rhodes books THE MAKING OF....., & DARK SUN? The pages describing the first few milliseconds of the explosions is really compelling writing. I enjoyed them both.

Perhaps I ought to have used other words to describe Rush. A few that I can think of are: pompous, arrogant, smug, self-centered, egotistical...I think you're getting the picture.

You DO know that is an act don't you? Of course you do.

I have some Trinitite I picked up when I lived in Socorro in the late '70s. I understand its not hot, but I wouldn't tape it to my forehead. If you don't mind my asking, where did you get yours?

I remember the dark days when there wasn't a Rush Limbaugh. I think to many people are beginning to take him for granted. Go Rush!

From my father, who'd picked it up somewhere along the line.
He said something about it emitting something(alpha?) particles and that it wouldn't be prudent to cart it around in my pocket.
(It's glassy, why would I want to? *chuckle*)

Didn't pay attention to where and how he got his hands on it.
I'll have to ask him about it.
Of course, I'm likely to get the same answer I got about the brown flourite crystals I have that are on egrey limestone.
"Uhh.. I don't remember."
*sigh*

Rush is right about 99.99% of the time. The ONLY time he irritates me is when he doesn't believe that mental illness is real. Or any kind of mental problems, like OCD, ADD, Hyperactive, etc. We have so much of it in my family. My dad was ADD. My mom is hyper. At 77 she is still a whirlwind, as is her 89 year old hyper sister. I quit trying LONG ago to keep up with those two! But Rush believes in hearing problems, and drug addiction.

I LOVE Rush. I agree with him MOST of the time and with politics he is 100% correct -- and when he makes predictions, they come true.

I've read just about every book relating to the Manhattan Project. My senior thesis was on nuclear weapons and their use in WWII.

You can take the Trinity Tour twice a year. It is on the first Saturday in April and October. Since Trinity is on the White Sands Missile Range, you can only get there one of two ways. You can either come in at the Stallion Range Center which is at the northern part of WSMR. The way I went was with the convoy from Alamogordo. It is setup by the Chamber of Commerce and leaves around 8:00 A.M. It has a police escort the entire way so it doesn't stop for traffic lights or stop signs. Once you reach the base, there is an I.D. check before proceeding. (Took about 30 minutes for the entire convoy to be checked.) Then you drive on to Trinity.

Trinitite is fairly harmless. A couple of years ago someone at WSMR did a test to see if it could ruin film. They put a piece next to an unexposed roll of film for 24 hours. They then used the roll and developed it. There was not any fogging of the pictures.

The only way to know for sure if a piece is real trinitite is to check it with nuclear energy spectroscopy to measure the level of radioactive decay. From what I understand, trinitite produces a very specific pattern that cannot be faked. (I'm not a nuclear physicist so I don't understand it exactly but people have created fake trinitite in the past and made it slightly radioactive so this is the only way to be sure.)

At the site, there is a piece of the crater floor that is covered in a foot of sand and has a building protecting it. Under the sand is a sheet of trinitite that is to be preserved for the future. They do however put out some small pieces for people to see.

The last time I was out at Trinity site I came in from Stallion Gate by Socorro and decided to exit at Alamogordo (Gotta Love them Beehive hairdos). I did not realize that you had to be in a convoy for Alamogordo and got to the T where you would go Right for Socorro and Left for Alamogordo. I turned on my blinker to go left and waited for the MP to signal me. I was driving a truck with a Sandia Lab sticker and wearing a gold braid NASA cap---I looked like a Techie. After some hesitation, I lifted my hands in the universal WTF sign and the MP signaled me left. I got lost. The roads are not marked. Finally, I found a MP that looked to be sleeping in his jeep and got directions to Alamogordo. When I got to the Southern Gate, the guards had kittens. The first thing out of their mouths was "How did you get here?" I resisted the impulse to claim I'd pushed the truck most of the way. After about 1/2 an hour I was on my way.

I don't recall a building that houses any of the crater floor. In fact, as I recall, the Army ran off with the glass bowl under the bomb a long time ago.

Do listen for a while and that wind will blow the
liberal fuzz out of your head in just a little while.
When I first heard him, probably 15 yrs. ago, riding
in the car with my husband I absolutely could not take
another minute of it. Arrogant! I fumed, Conceited! I
thought. Then I caught the self-deprecating humor in
much of what he was saying and began to realize that here
is a man who has the guts to say what I've been thinking
For the most part, I agree with him on most things.
Sometimes he goes over the top and talks a bit naughty.
When he does that, I listen to something else. He is a
rare thing, a thinking man.

The building covering the piece of the crater floor was added in 1984. You can clearly see it in the upper part of the fenced in area.

There is a small door that is opened to let people look inside and see some pieces of trinitite.

(This picture is actually one I took @ Trinity.)
