frame grab taken from web site video footage May 11, 2004, shows a man, who identified himself as Nick Berg of Philadelphia (C) seated in front of his five masked captors moments before he was executed. Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq beheaded an American civilian and vowed more killings in revenge for the abuse of Iraqi prisoners, an Islamist Web site said on Tuesday. After one of the masked men read out a statement, they pushed Berg to the floor and shouted 'God is greatest' above his screams as one of them sawed his head off with a large knife then held it aloft for the camera. WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Reuters) - The family of Nick Berg, the 26-year-old American civilian beheaded in Iraq (news - web sites), said on Tuesday they were devastated by his death.

In a statement read on the lawn of the Berg family's home in West Chester, Pennsylvania, 15 miles west of Philadelphia, neighbor and friend John Hauser described Nick Berg as "a great kid."

"The Berg family is devastated by this loss," the statement said. "They want to extend their sympathy to other families who have also suffered. They are asking the army to expedite the release of Nick's body so they can make arrangements and put this behind them."

Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq beheaded Berg and vowed more killings in revenge for the "Satanic degradation" of Iraqi prisoners at the hands of U.S. troops, an Islamist Web site said on Tuesday.

A lot of people on here seem to be advocating nuking Iraqis, or saturation bombing, or wholesale killing of Iraqis.
Your point is?

My question is: do you people need to join Tony Soprano's sister in anger management classes?
No

Is there no sense of proportionality?
Sure there is.

Do you all think that just because someone is a "rag-head" that they need to die just so we can sleep at night?
Defining raghead as any terrorist or terrorist supporter, then the answer is yes.

How about identifying who the perpetrators are and punishing them?
I have no problem with that.

And why do you blame the left and the press for publicizing the abuse in Abu Gharab? Are we supposed to sodomize prisoners with glow sticks and murder prisoners in cold blood? Is that necessary? Has anyone ever offered evidence that a dead prisoner gives good intelligence?
Those questions are too stupid to justify answers.

Some morons on here excuse sodomizing little Iraqi boys while they are in detention, because of what happened to the mercenaries in Falluja. But Falluja happened 5 months after the documented abused at Abu Gharab.
See previous answer.

And why are people abusing the victim's father for opposing the war? Is opposing the war not his right as an American? Do you want to live in a country where no one questions the use of force?
I, for one, am not abusing the idiot, oops, father for being an anti American, liberal, ANSWER worshipping person.

I supported the war but I am not happy with the prosecution of the war. Am I a bad person if I complain about Rumsfeld's performance?
I AM CALLING YOU A LIAR. YOU ARE A TYPICAL PEACENIK, LEFTIST USEFUL IDIOT. Part 2, no you are not bad for complaining, just stupid.

. There are too many idiots on this post.
I repeat my response to your post 63.

You had your 15 minutes of fame so head back to DU and yuk it up with your buddies.

...the pictures would not exist if a few morons decided not to take the pics in the first place.

Then again the guards could have been deliberately bad. Sure they'd face court martial and punishment. American soldiers have also thrown grenades into US officers' tents. Which is worse? "Torture"/"humiliation" or "murder"?

Certainly there are some fifth columnists in the American military. The punishment for (attempted) murder is far worse than for the jailhouse antics.

CBS isn't to blame for the pictures, the soldiers are to blame for the pictures.

CBS is to blame for trying to say this was wide-spread and sanctioned behavior.

I'll blame the terrorists for this horrific act, but I'll not sit by and see the media who stirred up and misrepresented a story given a pass for doing so.

Islam is the Anti-Christ

Mohammed was/is the false prophet

The Abomination of Desolation is the Al-Aqsa mosque sitting in place of the Temple.

It looks like things are falling into place.

I just forced myself to watch the Nick Berg murder tape. OMG! I don't feel very well. I'm glad I didn't have my sound on. That murder took FOREVER. Those stupid towel heads don't even have the consideration to sharpen the friggin knife.

I have to say that was one of the longest minutes of my life. Horrible, evil, sick, saddistic, insane, cruel, evil, evil, evil.

Poor Nick may you rest in peace.

"The soldiers are to blame for taking these pictures - there is no excuse for that. If they never took pics and video, this wouldn't have happened."

It isn't just the fact that pictures and videos were taken of the illegal actions. The aberrant behavior that led to the taking of the photos is to be blamed. Since there isn't anything as "responsible journalism" anymore, I'm sure another news channel would have run these photos, especially if somebody like Hackworth been the conduit to get them into their hands.

It's ironic that some of these news channels refused to show the scenes of 9/11 on the first anniversary, but yet they would jump at the chance to put dirt like this out. It doesn't surprise me one bit. Afterall, showing films from 9/11 might bolster President Bush's image among the American people. In their eyes, it's more important to diminish his stature and put doubt in the people's minds as it relates to his leadership in the war.

Pa. family angry with American government over son's brutal death

"I knew he was decapitated before," said the father, Michael Berg. "That manner is preferable to a long and torturous death. But I didn't want it to become public."

Suzanne Berg said she was told her son's body would be transported to Kuwait and then to Dover, Del. She said the family had been trying for weeks to learn where their son was but that federal officials had not been helpful.

"I went through this with them for weeks," she said. "I basically ended up doing most of the investigating myself."

And in a few media reports, the Mother also kinda ridiculed the intentions of her son in Iraq by saying something like "He had this idea that he could rebuild communications..."

I send my prayers to Nick and his entire family, but his Mom's comment shows her disdain and disapproval for what Nick wanted to do in Iraq. Thoughts like that people should keep to themselves; not say them out loud after there has been a death. It shows she did not believe in her son's goals. Maybe she is not thinking her best; I would understand, I guess.

'....they laugh at us over our concern for the prison scandal...'

that's exactly what I thought, as I watched our Senators and Congresspeople question Rumsfeld et al. Our enemies are saying..look at the stupid Americans, we're killing their soldiers and they're focused on humiliating prisoners who, most likely, tried to kill their soldiers. When will we wake up. At election time, Americans need to remember the "do gooders" who try to do good for our enemies at the expense of America. Enough, vote out these people who care only about their own power and wealth. Kennedy, Kerry etc...men of the people, as long as the people don't come to close to their compounds.

"CBS aired these pictures for anything more than ratings and MONEY"
Exactly the case - and they wouldn't have released them if this had been done when Clinton was president.

My thoughts exactly. Mr. Berg sounds like a real decent, compassionate person. He did a lot of charitable work in third world countries. You would think the Liberals would claim him as one of there own except for one small matter-- he was a Bush supporter.

The sleezebag media whores who played the so-called Iraqi torture photos 24/7 are as much to blame for this kid's death as Al Qaida. An investigation of the so-called prison abuses would have been far more effective had it not been aired 24/7 by a bunch of d***able media whores whose only focus is getting their fellow travelers back into power.

May God hold Nick's family close beneath the shelter of His wing and comfort, guide, and help them through this horror, and give them peace. May He surround our troops within His providence, be their shield and buckler, and bless them to swiftly defeat these sons of Satan who have just reminded the world what is real and unconscionable torture.

I blame CBS.

Without them putting the photos on TV, this man would not be dead.

It would have all been handled by the courts and the military justice system. But the CBS media wh*res wanted ratings and money. Greed by the media killed this man and CBS is responsible for his death.

When were the other contractors killed?

Wednesday, March 31, 2004

Horrific and infuriating news from Iraq's Sunni triangle: "Suspected insurgents"--how's that for a euphemism--"killed four American civilian contractors in a grenade attack Wednesday in central Iraq," CNN reports:

I disagee. The pictures were run to provoke an overwhelming response to the actions of a few, to the detriment of these soldiers, their families and the military in the field.

In the end, I believe it is Kapinski which lead to the communication breakdown between officers and soldiers.

Are you telling me that she did instruct these people "in a military fashion" as to their duties and responsibilities at the prison at some point in time?

Are you telling me that the Red Cross reports were not discussed with her and any necessary action taken?

Are you telling me that her policy of "visiting each prison at least once in a three month period" is acceptable.

Are you telling me she had no authority? She says it was CIA territory so what she is telling me is that if she sees, or gets wind of something outside her box, she simply says "Not my box" and looks the other way?

The DUers just hate it when something that helps Bush is discussed. The DUmb people knew immediately that the prison abuse scandal would be put on the back burner because of the beheading.

So, they come to harass over here because the half-way DU losers don't go to DU during times like these...only the most fanatical remain at DU and also come here to post their garbage.

The media acted predictably - what major media outlet would never run that story?

I guarantee, if a dem were president they would NOT have shown the photos.

Why not? Because the pictures from day one clearly were the work of rogues who took personal pics and NOT under orders. The only reason the media ran with the pics was in order to say this was SOP under the Bush administration.

Along with the pictures were reports that said as much, thereby tarnishing the entire military and making them targets, which was why Myers asked CBS to hold off on airing the photos.

Maybe they should see the video. It sounds to me like it was quite long and torturous. Not just a slick one chop like in a guiotine.

CBS doesn't listen to Myers at all.

Remember she tried to get the raping of Juanita Broderick by Clinton story she did aired and they wouldn't do it until after the impeachment hearings were over.

For the life of me I don't know why she stays with them.
