Maybe he wasn't like his dad but there were some questions surrounding why this guy was in Iraq... could it be that he was there for the same reason the Japanese activists-turned-hostages were in Iraq and things didn't go as planned?

Possible, but the younger generation often rebels against their parent's beliefs. Right now its quite common to have college kids and recent graduates who are far more conservative than their liberal, screaming, doped up, self-indulgent, latchkey parenting, ex-hippie, Boomer parents.
