First Significant UK formation of 2004 spotted
On May 3, near Deacon Hill in Bedfordshire, UK, the first significant formation of the year has been spotted in a flowering field of oil seed rape.
The formation is similar in design to the 2003 Locust Grove, Ohio formation that appeared close to the Serpent Mound earthwork.
Although it has been raining rather steadily, since being spotted, the formation has been inspected, and there have been some details that have emerged which may indicate the formation may be not have been a human mechanically-made one.
I thought the first one looked like an Arab in a turban.

After reading your post, I'm curious what you think is the cause.
Then they wouldn't be called "crop circles" would they?
Can't remember where I read it but someone suggested that it could be either some bored techie doodling, via satellite lasers or psyops by our government, using the same method, to see how we'd handle contact with aliens.
Hey, it's as good as any other theory. Has anybody ever done a correlation, if any, between the flight paths of satellites and the circles? Maybe some spy satellite orbits aren't known.

With basic mathematics, rope, and wood boards.
"Why are they made?"
For artistic reasons, for a challenge, and for fun.
"Who comes up with the designs and what do they mean if anything?"
The makers come up with the designs; some have meaning (some have been used as advertisements!), and some are purely interesting shapes.
"How many men does it take to make one like this one and how long does it take?"
Usually 2-6 people. A complicated circle can be completed in one night. Most simple ones take a few hours.
"How many people worldwide are involved in making crop circles and why has no one ever ratted out the perpetraters?"
Some hundreds are involved. Some have freely admitted to it. See circlemakers.org. Since it's not a major crime, there is no reason to "rat out" anyone.

A few guys with some rope, stakes and boards. A well planned agenda. A basic knowledge of geometry and surveying. Some flashlights.
A cool hobby for science geeks, it seems to me! Gets your technical and artistic cravings satisfied.
OTOH, they could do them in feed lots. Then they'd be crap circles...
I'm not refuting your statement and I am not making a case for anything ET but I'd like to know how the folks that feel they are man-made explain some of the things that are found near the center of some of these formations.
Such as the differences seen at the molecular level in the seeds of affected crops near the center as opposed to those further towards the outside of some formations.
Also, how is it that in some formations, the stalks are broken at the base...leaving little to the imagination as to how they are bent...but on other formations, not a single stalk shows any sign of damage at the base...they are simply bent and look as if they grew that way.
Just curious how some folks account for these anomalies in an overnight, man-made formation.

I don't have a thought on what or who causes them. If they are manmade then the questions I posed have answers. I have not seen plausible answers to any of them. Therefore it is the beginning of a very interesting story ... not the end. As you say "they're a welcome diversion."
Have you ever noticed that crop circles always appear nine days before a secret Bilderburger subcommittee meeting?
