Let's not burn bandwidth re-educating you about the

Ahem - I need no 'education' on this subject; rather, it's the BULK of the unwashed, non-technical WallMart Shrink-wrapped merchandise consuming masses here (perhaps including YOU) who need, nay, require the education.

Got it?

Now, how about you? Are you the least bit conversant or knowledgeable on the history of development of bulk power generation and delivery systems and the measures undertake to assure system reliabity - also termed 'security' (NOT physical or internet 'security', but, rather the integritity and 'stability' of a LOT of rotating machinery and interconnected buses that comprises the myriad of rotating generators making up the generation part of 'the grid') by professionals working in the field -

- or not?

Heck 99.99 percent of you guys haven't taken THE TIME to study the HALF DOZEN or so well--documented BLACKOUTS we've had in the last forty years (BY WHICH you could see JUST how much of a foul-up it takes ON BEHALF OF the power company to bring about a LARGE blackout).

No, it isn't I who require education, it's others ...

"99.99 percent of you guys". Please, go find the other 00.01 percent and congregate.

My, oh my, are we supposed to be thrilled with you or what? Why don't you enlighten us "idiots" with your superior knowledge of the subject, instead of coming on this thread and virtually demanding a treatise and/or doctoral thesis on "the grid." Unable to condense all of that superior knowledge down to a few sound bites for the consumption of the "unwashed masses"? Pity us that we missed the opportunity.

Most of us here on the Threat Matrix are doing our damnedest to stay abreast of a rapidly deteriorating situation; and we don't need someone with a condescending attitude lecturing us for our lack of knowledge in ANYTHING. Each here contributes in their own way, enlightening others in their given field of expertise.

You can come here and lurk, or you can come here and contribute in a productive manner (if you're capable).

If this is a little too opaque, let me clear it up for you: Play nice or GO ELSEWHERE.

I am with relatives in the hydro electric and nuclear industries. Having read you last several posts (I bit my tongue on you last post), all I have to say is...Oh brother!!!!! Instead of being so superior and saying nothing try and actually explain something nicely, that is unless you have the loosing argument then stay with nasty sarcasm.

You have two alternators that you wish to run in parallel. On your desk is a frequency meter and a phase meter. What must you do before connecting both alternators to the same bus? What happens if you connect them with a 20 degree phase angle mismatch?

I know the answers from both a practical and theoretical point of view.

I asked for your professional assessment of the exposure of New York City to a blackout if all coal fired plants went offline because the rail bridges supplying the coal were destroyed. If you don't have sufficient knowledge to address the question, then just say "I don't know". It's no reflection on your skills or knowledge. Your input was solicited because of your prior involvement in power and blackout issues.

I'm asking the question because my program sponsor at the Federal Railway Administration is concerned about monitoring 55 critical rail bridges. My current work involves monitoring railcar bearings using digital signal processing techniques to identify a frequency signature against a database of known defect frequency signatures. This defect analysis is a spinoff of work my group did for the Navy to identify defects in the E2C aircraft engines. We're also working up an analysis profile for the titanium diapraghm coupler between the engine shafts of the Osprey aircraft to detect approaching failure. I do have an little experience with rotating shafts in critical machinery.

Back to the topic. Is New York exposed if we lose the coal fired power plants?
