Tom Hanks backs US troops in Iraq
2.11PM, Tue May 18 2004
Tom Hanks, star of Second World War TV drama Band of Brothers and the movie Saving Private Ryan, has voiced his support for US troops.
He was speaking in Cannes, where film-maker Michael Moore and actor Sean Penn yesterday used the film festival to attack the Bush administration and the war in Iraq.
Hanks said: "These are extremely tough times, not just for America but for the world.
"We are up against a type of philosophy we don't quite understand. We are in a difficult sort of grey area now that defies logic and defies common sense. We understood the evil of World War Two."
"To our troops now, all you can say is God bless every one of them. Let's hope they find safety and a peaceful world.
"I'm sure they will find the American populace much more understanding of what they've been through."
don't worry too much about it. In a day or so his Hollywood friends will set him straight.
That's what I was thinking...
Not a very bold statement but at least he tried.
Hanks is a stand up guy. Dale Dye, who coached him in 'Saving Private Ryan,' said he was the epitome of professionalism and endured the training he received without a single whine.
Kiss that third Oscar goodbye. |
Tom Hanks is alright. Sure he's a liberal, but he deserves a lot of credit for bringing the WW II memorial to fruition.
And I can't wait to get the Band of Brothers DVD for my birthday.
Hanks always struck me as a pretty normal guy. I vaguely recall that during the impeachment of Clinton he came out with a critical statement of the President's behavior. He then hastily backtracked a day or two later. I always wondered if the Hollywood colleagues put the heat on him.
Tepid and qualified statement if you ask me. However coming from a leftist hollywood type it is quite something. If they all were like that I could go back to the theaters and watch movies again.
In Europe during WWII, we were fighting against crazed imperialists who wanted to kill all the Jews.
Today, we're fighting against crazed Jihadists who want to kill all the Jews.
Like, wow man, I've never seen anything like this before.
I still thank Tom Hanks for his support, though he muddles the issue.
This time, his statement is carefully worded. Last time he spoke about a political situation in public, it sounded like he was supporting Bush. His liberal buddies set him straight and within a few days he made it very clear that he was not pro-Bush. So now, he just offers platitudes about our troops finding peace, and acceptance back home.
However, coming after Moore and Penn have acted so disgracefully, he is obviously trying to distance himself from that crowd. It must be tough to be surrounded by Leftists and to feel compelled not to offend them by disagreeing with them publicly. You would think that a guy like Hanks wouldn't have to worry about where his next movie deal was coming from. But maybe it's being excluded from the social circle that is even more potent.
Hanks puts his money where his mouth is when it comes to honoring our vets. He does a lot more than just say a few tepid words.
Someone in Hollywood sorta gets it....great!
I agree Hanks is groping for reality a bit. But perhaps he caused just a twinge of discomfort in his audience, which at this point is perfectly clear on the identity of the evil the world faces: It is that messianic Christian cowboy in the White House and his big oil buddies who want to get rich at the expense of children, Palestinians, and a woman's right to choose.
If Tom Hanks caused that vision to waver just for a moment he accomplished something.
Was he shouted off the stage?
If he had said this anywhere else I would agree with you.
I agree--not a very bold statement...he said he hoped for our soldiers safety and "peace". He did not say he supported their efforts on our behalf.
More we support the troops rhetoric. I don't know if Hanks supports our mission in Iraq. You can't tell from that statement.
I understand it. The Islamacists embody every trait we have been taught over the millennia to be recognized as evil.
He's no Mel Gibson, but compared to the rest of the Hollyweird group he is atleast not screaming and venting hatred at the President of the United States!
