NEW YORK A U.S. soldier who left his unit in Iraq rather than fight for what he called an "oil-driven war" is claiming that he's a conscientious objector who believes the war is unjust and that he's upset over civilian deaths. Staff Sgt. Camilo Mejia (search), 28, of Miami Beach, Fla., faces a court-martial Wednesday. If convicted of desertion by a military jury at Fort Stewart, Ga., he could find himself in prison for a year and may receive a bad conduct discharge.

I love the "No BLood For Oil" part. Here we have these liberals, cowards and whinners gripping about $2 gasoline on the one hand and then saying "No BLood For Oil" on the other.
If this dirtsack ever has a heart attack, I hope they wheel him to the hospital in rickshaw rather than in one of those evil, oil-guzzling ambulance thingeys.
We are truly a nation that demands to go before the Pearly Gates without dying.
It is impossible to be a conscientious objector in an all volunteer army!
The guy is a deserter and a traitor to boot.
Send him away for life for all I care. As a matter of fact, the a firing squad would shut this traitor up for good.
So, why did he join up if he objects to war?
And is he giving back all the money he's earned up to the point where he decided he wants his mommy and he wants to go home?
Man, I am so so so sick of this "war for oil" bs. Where the hell do they get this crap? If Iraq was Cuba they`d be screaming "No war for cigars".
If Iraq was Cuba they`d be screaming "No war for cigars".
The military actually has a policy in place that lets service members apply for CO status after they've joined up. But as you can imagine, they don't make the process quick or easy, and the burden of evidence is not in favor of the individual.
This guy is just lying about his CO status -- if he had a genuine change of heart, he could have used the military's process.
In addition to the other penalties he faces, I beleive that SSG Mejia can be deported from the country, since he is not a U. S. citizen. In some ways, that may be the harshest penalty of all. But it's a penalty that he (unfortunately) seems to have earned for himself.
No blood for hydrogen! No blood for dilithium crystals!
ANWAR. Bush should be shouting this from the rooftops.
Oh, no! We're imposing CURFEWS in Iraq! The horror!
Of course, then it would be "No Elk Blood for Oil" or some other equally idiotic and false soundbyte.
I can see it emblazoned on signs and giant puppets now...
You know what? I think every single one of the troops and/or their families who say "We/they only joined for the benefits and/or the college education" should have to give back ALL the money they have earned!
Thanks for the info. I was just talking off the top of my head. It made sense to me, kind of like me accepting employment at an abortion mill, then deciding to sue them for emotional distress because I am anti-abortion.
The idiot joined up, but he was propbably one of those no-good liberals who joined for the money and education, never expecting he might actaully have to do what a Soldier does: Fight Wars.
This guy was not a citizen????????
Then kill him as a spy for the enemy.
We have lots of non-citizens who serve well in the U. S. military. So I doubt the Army will accept your helpful suggestion.
Besides drilling our own land for oil, we have other options. Busing eats up lots of unnecessary supplies.
Planes should fly only if they are at least 3/4 full, otherwise, consolidate flights.
Above all, WHY isn't there any mention on the news--any of the channels or talk shows-- of the swiftly increasing amount of oil products China is now consuming since their standard of living has had drastic changes? Seems to me that is where most of the oil problems are.
There has to be more drilling and more refinery production set into motion NOW. China isn't going to slow down their consumption of gasoline and oil by products, including lubrication items for their increased heavy mechanical production.
